A couple of issues

Hey, folks. I'm new here and new to Half-Life. I'm experiencing a few problems in Half-Life 2. First and foremost, a number of textures in the game are appearing as pink and black checkerboards. This is the most pertinent issue. Secondly, there seems to be a sound problem. If I'm not looking towards a person who is talking their voices are practically mute. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Verify your caches.
Steam > Games > Right Click Game > Properties > Local Files > Verify Integrity of Game Cache.

Ok, the funky textures are prob down to your video card driver, try downloading the latest version.

The audio, I would guess that you have set HL2 to use 5.1, but your on headphones, or 2.1 speakers? Check in the games audio options that it is set correctly for whatever audio hardware you have.

Okay! Verifying fixed the first problem. Thanks guys. As for the sound? I have 5.1 speakers so it should be working... But the moment I turn my back on someone they are absolutely mute.

youre right. It is quite an epic moment. First Time I have seen that option work here as well.

Also I should make it clear, I cannot move into the huge graphical error. It stops me like a wall.

That is quite possibly the weirdest bug I have ever seen. If you can bear the horrors of the Steam tech support site, check it out with them. They should (eventually) be able to sort you out. With every problem I've had with their games they have been accurate if not punctual.
