A Death in the Family

Having volunteered for Iraq, Mark Daily was killed in January by an I.E.D. Dismayed to learn that his pro-war articles helped persuade Daily to enlist, the author measures his words against a family's grief and a young man's sacrifice.

by Christopher Hitchens November 2007
Very good article

Why did Hitchens support Iraq?

Also, it was a pretty good article. He clearly felt quite strongly. That kid sounds like a great guy.

Why did Hitchens support Iraq?

Because he wanted to prove that even atheists have their bat shit crazy extremists. I guess he figured a few hundred thousand people dying in the name of fighting Islam was worth it. I mean he did say he knew that many people would die as a result of this, and he knew that terrorism and WMDs were lies, so I really don't see any other reason that he wanted to go in there besides fighting Islam. Granted, I have not seen the 30 minute video above, I will have to watch it later when I get home. Maybe he says something that would explain why he supported this war knowing all that, but from everything I read I doubt it.

I'm sure a lot of liberals here would find themselves agreeing with Hitchens more often than not when it comes to a lot of things, even if they regard his character as unsavory.

The invasion had nothing to do with Islam, why would you think that?

It wasn't even an Islamist regime.

I didn't say I believed that, I said I believe that's the only reason he supported this war. For a guy that was against vietnam in such strong terms, for a guy that says he knew Saddam had no weapons of mass destruction and was in no way linked to terrorism and he knew what would happen if we went in there, I can not understand any other reason for his support of this war.

Humanitarian intervention. Stabilization of the region. Democracy.

Humanitarian intervention.
As stern already showed you this is not true. When you read what he said you replied "shit, now I don't know what to think". Has anything changed since?
Stabilization of the region.
:LOL::LOL::LOL:

You're not being serious, are you?

Democracy.

As Hitchens knows very well you can't force democracy on people that can't handle, nor want, democracy.
