As the EU stands I don't like how much power the parliament has over the separate nation states. I think that having a parliament governing so many countries, so diverse in culture, tradition and legal systems cannot work and appease the populations of the various states. I am Irish, and although I bear no animosity towards the British and think the IRA are a pack of scumbags, I think the Irish have a bit of a sore spot when it comes to a foreign parliament governing us. This is why the Lisbon treaty wasn't ratified here.

So are you in favour or against a European Federation? I can safely say I'm against it.

No, I'd far rather the UK became the 51st state.

And on a side note, if your family lived just a couple of hundred of miles to the north, it would be quite likely, that 30 or so years ago, the IRA would have been all that stood between your house and pogroms of loyalist mobs supported by the police.

I've always thought it was a stupid idea for a ruling body to be separated so drastically from the geographical location of the citizens that are being ruled over.

isnt the EU for that?

also looking at how much the europeans love each other I kind of doubt it will suceed

Which made sure the pogroms of republican mobs and terrorists didn't have such an easy time killing protestants and loyalists.

And so the pointless circle of blame continues. :naughty:

I have no clue what the current situation is in Europe right now. Theres so much "change" like my president has promised which is actually a bunch of bullshit right now as he trouts around on various networks acting like an idiot.

There were no republican pogroms on anything like the same scale. Of course, there were and are isolated incidents but fundamentally the republican movement is not anti-protestant it's anti-Britian. The Loyalist agenda however is anti-catholic.

I don't like the idea that the EU is trying to imitate the US system. As it was said we are to diverse for that to really work. I really don't like the fact that the people of the EU nations don't get a say in it apart from the Irish. Every other Government never give the people a referendum to decide whether we want to or not despite promising us one. I like the EU to simply stick to economics, where we can trade freely between EU nations and that's all. I don't want to idiot in Brussels making the rules.

It would strengthen the states , but some European states wont agree to be in a union with some countries. For example , Serbia wont tolerate Kosovo and the Czech republic is not recognized by Liechtenstein due to some ancient dispute I think.

One day Europe will sooner or later become a "United States of Europe". Just a matter of time ( 60 years?) or one big war.

Do you have any idea what a federation means? Or do you simply operate on popular knowledge?

Nobody will be governing member states of the federation, they will govern themselves, with the European governing body being responsible for European-wide decisions, administration and facilitating cooperation between members and foreign affairs.

I'm all for the European Federation, for too long did we stay separate and vulnerable.

Yep, Not so radically but still, i think it is necessary. Europe divided is so medieval.

I think there is no hope in hell of a central body being able to fairly represent Europe as a whole when there is such a huge range of different langauges and cultures present.

^ Well, the idea is that Europeans share a common cultural heritage based in the Greco-Roman tradition as well as modern ideals such as liberalism, secularism, democracy and social justice. This shared heritage will lead to an ability to overcome and even gain from the national and regional differences and build institutions that aim for a common future. It's an uncertain path, sure, as nothing similar has been attempted before in history, but I personally think it's worth a try, as I love Europe a whole lot more than I love Sweden.

Throughout the numerous times this topic has come up, I've never seen anyone give any valid reasons for why the EU is a good thing. It always comes down to baseless ideals and emotions dressed up to sound smart and intellectual. Arguments such as "we share a cultural heritage" and "a divided Europe is so medieval" are utterly, utterly meaningless. And irrelevant.

And, contrary to some people's beliefs, the EU does not only legislate on EU matters, it interferes in countless domestic affairs aswell. 75% of UK laws passed in the last decade have come from the EU.

Centralisation of power is the enemy of liberty, and in light of the extremely undemocratic way the EU has conducted itself thus far, holding the views of those it supposedly represents in utter contempt, they can go **** themselves.

^^ See, that's why we kicked you guys out of our country.

USA! USA!

Except the USA is worse at doing democracy then most European countries.

As for the EU the biggest mark against it is its so god-damn unnecessary.

It exists to solve a problem that doesn't exist, WW2 did more to make Europeans finally tire of war between ourselves then anything the EU has done.

It needs to be a treaty organization for peaceful trade and coexistence, not building up to a centralized super state no-one wants or needs.

And the EU single currency was dumb.

no offense but you must be no fun at parties

WTF does a politics discussion have to do with parties?

If it was a step towards greater globalism I'd be in favour of it.

Stern hasn't got anything good to say?

Anyway, I'm all for free trade within Europe and some bureaucrats in Brussels giving my Dad money for being a farmer, but for further political integration? I'm not so sure.

Then again if its our only chance to stand up to the Chinese, we'll see.
