My friend is going to be getting a new computer soon and I told him to build his own, so I'm helping him. He wants it to cost no more than $1000, which I think will be pretty easy. Here's what I have picked out:

Athlon 64 2800+ $185 retail

MSI nForce3 250 Chipset Motherboard for AMD Athlon 64 Socket 754 CPU, Model "K8N Neo Platinum" (MS-7030) -RETAIL $130

Logitech Z640 5.1 Speakers -RETAIL $55

Lite-On White 52X32X52 Internal EIDE CD-RW Drive, Model SOHR-5238S, Retail $31

Lite-On White 8X DVD+/-RW Drive, Model SOHW-812S, Retail $72

POWMAX Black/Silver Mid Tower ATX Case with 400W Power Supply, Side Window & handle, Model "CP0327PL-4" -RETAIL $28

He already has a good monitor, keyboard, mouse, and a good 60GB HDD so we're gonna keep that. I didn't want to spend too much on the case can someone tell me if the power supply looks ok or if it's a cheap one. Right now we're at $488 and the only thing left is the video card. I didn't think we'd be able to do it, but it looks like we have enough for an X800 or 6800. I guess we'd go with the XT or Ultra, I dunno... but he's not getting this just yet, he is gonna sometime in the near future, anything we should wait for?

Forgot something:

Corsair Value Select (Dual Pack) 184 Pin 1G(512MBx2) DDR PC-3200 - OEM $174

total $662.98

Maybe we should make some of the other stuff better, like a better A64 and just get a 9800 pro for now? He can always upgrade that later easily. It would help if someone responded. Where's Asus?

I've had problems with POWMAX before... Bought one of the 400 watt PSUs and the thing just up and died one day.

If I were you I'd minus the CDRW drive since the DVD RW drives usually can do cd-rw and serve as a CDrom. Also you might want to get another type of PSU probably an Antec 400watt PSU. I have a system right now that totals up to about 1000.

1. Antec Black Case w/ 380W PSU (Very Quiet Case) 99.00
2. NEC 8X DVD+RW/-RW Model ND2500A - 69.00
3. Artic Silver Ceramique 3.99
4. 1 Antec Clear 120mm Fan 12.99
5. Sony Black Floppy Drive 11.99
6. Western Digital 80GB HD 74.75
7. 2 Corsair PC3200 170.00
8. ASUS K8N-E Mobo 143.00
9. Athlon64 3000+ 223.00
10. Sapphire 9800Pro 194.00

All adds up to 1002.71

K maybe I should get a case without a power supply and get a good power supply separate.

Edit: K I found a better though it's more expensive

ANTEC Black Performance Series II SOHO File Server Tower ATX Case with 400W Power Supply, Model "SX1040BII" $96

So that's $731 and now the question left is what video card. It's either a 9800 pro or a 128mb 6800 non gt non ultra. I can get it for $289. But I'm thinking I should do the 9800 pro and let him upgrade later.
