Alright just to explain myself, I've been testing Source since it first came out on this machine
My Comp Specs
-AMD 2500+ Barton
-512 DDR 333
-80 GIG 2meg cache
-ASUS A7N8X-X nFORCE 2 CHIPSET
-Audigy 2
-ATI 9800PRO 128MB with a rev.3 cooler (45% cooler temp)
-DX 9.0C
-SP2
-Win XP PRO
Game Settings (Default)
-1024X768 -32 bit
-High Models
-High Textures
-Reflect world
-High Shadows
-Trilinear Anistrophic
-No Anti Aliasing
-DirectX level 9.0
Visual Stress test score: 84.5
In game average FPS: 40 ( 15 in gun fights, that is RIDICULOUS )
Now you see, with that kind of computer, it meets the recommended settings. You would think I would be able to play the game fine with at least 60 stable FPS right? No.
Ok so lets decrease the settings and try to get more FPS
I turned the game settings to
-640X480 -16 bit
-Low Models
-Low Textures
-Reflect none
-Low Shadows
-Bilinear Anistrophic
-No Anti Aliasing
-Direct X level 7.0
My FPS stayed the same, no performance increase. Other than faster load times and 15% increase in stability ( no chop ups)
Yet people with lower comp specs and GeForce4's are having better performance than me in DirectX7 path coding...wow..
Now...there are people with systems lower than mine, with GeForce4's or GeForce3's running this game in DirectX 7.0 pathcode achieving SOLID 80FPS. Sheer madness man, sheer madness.
So I tried a lot of things
-Driver cleaned
-Reformatted
-Defragged
-Max to min settings
-Omega drivers
-OverClocked my 9800PRO to XT speeds ( no performance increase there )
-Upgraded to DX9.0c, upgraded to SP2
-Upgraded my motherboard drivers
Absolutely NO FPS increase...
I am very disappointed, as I bought this computer to simply play HL2.I know there are people out there with the same specs with even better CPU's or more ram who have less performance than me. I find this outrageous.
