Misconceptions on Evolution

The word "theory" in "the theory of evolution" does not imply doubt in mainstream science about the validity of this theory; the words "theory" and "hypothesis" are not the same in a scientific context (see Evolution as theory and fact). A scientific theory is a set of principles which, via logical deduction, explains the observations in nature. The same logical deductions can be made to predict observations before they are made. Evolution is a "theory" in the same sense as the theory of gravity or the theory of relativity.

Even though many Christians have adopted abortion as a cornerstone practice to abolish as part of their religious principles, nowhere in the Bible is abortion explicitly indicated as being against God's will or prohibited. According to the book of Leviticus (which contains many laws not accepted by most Christians), killing a fetus is considered a crime only punishable by a fine

Pong was not the first video game. In fact, Tennis for Two, created in 1958, was one of the first electronic games to use a graphical display.[78] The first commercially sold coin-operated video game, Computer Space, was created in 1971 by the future founders of Atari. Fearing that Computer Space had not been popular because of its complexity, Nolan Bushnell and Allan Alcorn created Pong in 1972 after Bushnell had seen a similar game at a trade show.

I think I remember reading some of this article before, rather interesting some of it.

Who said Pong was the first video game? And furthermore, what does that have to do with politics?

Dear Vageta:

I cannot read your post because you're on my banwagon so I'll just assume you agree with it ...well I agree too, lets all be agreeable and agree to agree, agreed?

Aren't there some misconceptions in this list of misconceptions? AFAIK Spacewar was the first computer game ever (I've played it and it's shit).

Also I'm moving this to General Off-Topic.

I mean, er, The Lounge.

wikipedia says that Tennis for Two predates Spacewar by 4 years ...and this is in the politics sections because people use some of these misconceptions in their debates

This shitty computer won't let me use the admin panel properly, so you win - this time.

Damnit Sulk... Make me look like a fool why don't you!

Yeah I remember I was debating over the future of America's economy the other week and some moron started using Pong in his argument, and I was like "Damn it to hell, if only I had a sticky thread to show this moron to refute his argument!"

Abortion is never mentioned in the bible because it would be random and not make any ****ing sense. It is common Christian belief (from the bible) that all people have the right to life, and most christian religions developed it as their doctrine that after conception life exists.

Except for fags and other sinners.

If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.

...Whilst guidelines pertaining to genital discharge, or how many different fibres should be present in clothing, aren't arbitrary or nonsensical at all.

One common misconception is that most people think Stern is old.

Old is a chronological term used within the context of Time-Space. Since Stern is in fact an entity and phenomenon outside of the laws of physics his "age", if one can be implied to him, is beyond the limits of the laws that govern our universe, but in laymens terms, he's been around since before our universe, if a before can be so applied to it.

Don't be silly Nuri, Stern isn't like that. The Ascension failed, remember?

Another common misconception is that Wiki is the font of all wisdom and it's word is definitive. It's reasonable starting point for fact checking, but I have strong reservations about the validity of much of what gets put up there (Always check the references).

I mean the first quote you cite there Stern appears to have no source reference to it whatsoever. It's just something that some contributor has concluded. It's a reasonable conclusion, but it's not backed by anything.

My understanding of a theory (as I was taught) has always been that it's a working model to explain a phenomena, and that throughout history as our ability to understand/observe things has improved due to better methods and tools, theories get debunked and revised accordingly. Evolution is the strongest theory going about how we came to be (certainly a lot more so than Intelligent design or any other Creationist jabber), but I'm pretty sure its still considered a widely accepted working model rather than an absolute given.
