I was browsing and realizing the kind of awful hostility some people have towards people that are exited and simply dont reconize that they are discussing old news. Really if I wasnt and insider and saw this I would be totally exited! And to be honest I think the amount of negavitiy around here is becomming rediculous I realize it gets tiresome with countless spamlike threads but sometimes being nice a little bit wouldent hurt any of you, I saw this thread http://www.halflife2.net/forums/showthread.php?t=26638&page=1&pp=15 and it clicked in me that hl2.net shouldent be like this.. it is supposed to be a friendly place for people to discuss HL2 related matters in a non hostile fun promoting enviorment- thats what I love so much about these forums. But flaming somebody to such a great extent over things like this is becomming much a to common thing. Please everyone settle down and just make peace with innocent un-informed newbs.

merc was right in saying
lol you guys are all so nice, all you do is bash on him... whats wrong with you guys, you need to chill out... hey buddy it was news to me! thanks!

The community members need to stop being hostile to new members or each other, or we'll start being hostile to the more veteran members. Something we don't do often.

yeah there is really a lot of pretty bad attitudes around here. me being one of them probably, but i try and help. it irritates the hell out of me when people say "old news" or whatever. its old to them, but theres a ton of people who havent seen it. the staff here is pretty good in general, but there a couple rof the most pompous wankers ive ever seen. same with the members, but i hear you. and youre right.

I also wish people would realize that spamming "OMG OLD NEWZ WTF LOL DUMBAS!!11oneoEN" is just as bad as creating the thread in the first place.. honestly. And I hope they do realize all they are doing is bumping the thread.. and for what? More flames.. wow thats some logic there.

they think that because they have 3842098304 posts they can shit all over other peoples opinions. but im not bitching, theres a pretty good community here. especially in the editing forums.

Everyone's just too uptight these days. I honestly had no real issue with that thread, it's not exactly like it's easy to jump into a gaming community and know all of the known information. But, it always gets to me when I see people asking questions in the VALVe info thread.. can they not read the title? :rolling:

Edit: ahhhh.. that face is insync with Chris' avatar.. it's a conspiracy (I know, it's the same image, but sshhh!)!

I agree. This is why sometimes I kind of just lerk here instead of posting.. I would rather not hear post things like "OMG WTF DUMbazz!!11oneone" or "thanks for the OLD NEWS AZZHat".

I'm fed up of all the newbie bashing. This isn't the way me and your mother brought you guys up. All of you, go to your room!!

I'm already in my room :) And, besides, I was good!
/me hides in the corner anyway

I swear merc is some kind-of joke from valve. dosnt stop me from loving the kid though :D

Perhaps a stickie post from a moderator about this, called
"WE WERE ALL ONCE NEW BEFORE TOO!" Yes? Yeah.....

Btw, I see this everywhere, not just "General Discussion" either. "General Editing", "Models & Skins" and the oh-so-gargantuan "Off-Topic" suffer the same malady.

I really don't see the bashing coming from the regular forum posters. All of the bashing is coming from the headcrabs of this world.

heh

unfortunately not true. When I'm pissed i.e., I bash n00bs to calm down.

Hand on my heart, I never jump on someone for posting old news, only those who're stupid, or well, in my eyes stupid. Which might not always be nice, but yeh, I try :/

The next person who makes an 'In before Lock' post will be made to look very stupid :)

Same goes for 'Old News' Simply report the post to us, and we shall deal with it, in a nice way :)

just my input: if someone posts old news, i would just tell them and not flame... shame not everyone has this way of thinking.

Yeah, backing up what ComradeBadger just said, the amount of posts you guys thinks it takes to get across that it's old news etc. is ridiculous.

It takes one person to post there and politely say "Hey, this has been posted before. Don't worry about it, a moderator can close it. You can find the original thread by searching keyword "xxxxxxx" or go direct to it by clicking "http://www.halflife2.net/forums/showthread.php?t=999999999". Thanks".

Then if that person could click on the report post button to let us know in case we miss it then the problem is solved, everyone is happy. I mean ffs, what is the point in posting flames at somebody for posting old news? Also, if there wasn't so much hositility in all of you some people could actually benefit from the thread being open longer and not filled with the flaming spam because there is times where old news to us, isn't old news to a handful of other people.

Like any one would bloody listen anyway. I am actually getting really annoyed with people that consistantly insist on hijacking threads and adding their own colourful and usually offensive contributions to them.

Of course no-one will listen, it's the simple mob mentality premise. One does it, they all do it. Of course, it is a tempting thing to do once in a while, I know I've been guilty of doing such things in the past. I'm sure most people have, or have had thoughts about doing.

I'm really sorry. My attitude has been slipping more often these days. I know that the newbs who are posting repeat old news are just trying to help, and they are doing it for us, but I get carried away. I will refrain from posting in threads like these from now on.

Yeah we had noticed :p
We'd appreciate it if you could sort it out like you say :)

Thanks Pendragon :)

Does this forum have a read-only members class beside the guest one ?
Flaming boys should be put there for 1 week or 2 with a link to the rules page or to this thread in their private messages.
Less work for the admins.
It's not the job of the admins to educate peoples.

(I'm sorry, I feel like my english is not very good... :( I hope its ok)

That is a very good idea Stef! Don't feel bad about your english, it is quite understandable :p

I shall never make another news post, thanks to some of the folks on this board...I post an article just 16 hours old and it's "ancient news"..."use the search feature moron"...all I can say is wow, the news I post new or old must be WAY important for all the jerks on the forums to feel its perfect for expressing their opinions...

Don't listen to the louder, more obnoxious people. Really, we're not ALL like that. I welcome new members, and have no issues with repeat threads (as long as it's not "the" HL2 casemod ;) lol), some people are just WAY too uptitght.. namely because they have no new info, and they're desperate

heh, I am just getting started here but I've been a longtime browser of these forums....nice postcount Shuzer :p

Thanks! :) Glad you're not scared away, as this community wasn't this hostile a year ago.. guess that's what a lack of HL2 does to you ;)

Repeated/old news threads annoy me to death. That's why I usually keep out of the Gen. disc forum.

About your thread h4vvok, there had already been about 5 threads on this news before you posted it. Some several days before your post. What matters is how old the actual news is, not when gamespot posted it, gamespot is slow compared to this place. Besides, if I type 'august gold' in the search box, I see several threads with the news in the title.
I don't have pity for people getting flamed for posting old stuff if they're too lazy to use the search function. It only takes 2 clicks you know. Have some consideration for users who see the same 'release date news' posted over and over and over.

Of course people shouldn't flame, but don't complain about people telling you to use the search function. It's there for a reason.

PS: I hope this post wasn't too hateful, obnoxious or uptight. If it was, I hope it didn't disturb your reading pleasure, site experience, and haircut. Thanks for flying wi... *ahem* nevermind that.

Im a prick sometimes becuase i always wonder if people are purposly starting stupid threads just to be jerks.

It just gets on my tits when theres 5+ threads of the exact same subject on the 1st page and the person doesnt even bother looking, they just see something asume that out of the countless thousands of half life 2 fans that they are the first and then just post it...

Its not like we are asking them to manualy read the entire forum, but just a skim over the 1st page would 9 times out of 10 avoid the flames.

But then again, new people will always assume they are first and will never search first so the only way to stop the flames is for the more regular members to stop.

At the end of the day its the staffs desicion and ill live by it as long as its not too wierd like "you must address all staff as Sir! or King!" :|

And I shouldn't have to use the search function every single time I think I have a bit of important news that SOME people may not have caught because they do not monitor these boards 24/7. Just because you are totally addicted to being up to date on all the latest halflife news doesn't give you a right to flame anyone who thought the community might want to recieve a bit of information they found out. Not everyone can browse these forums 24/7 and as threads get bumped information moves down or up the chain. And FYI I browsed the first page on general forums, and the most informative topic i saw on it relating to release dates was a post asking "What will you do when Halflife 2 goes gold?"...And the search engine is something you use to find old information, but not all the "reposted" information is old news, you need to read the details as sometimes there JUST might be something new that wasn't in similar information posts.

I am not addicted to these forums, and I hardly monitor General Discussion 24/7 :dozey:. As I mentioned in my earlier post, I hardly ever go there. I didn't flame you in your thread either. As for some people not having caught that news yet, I didn't see any posts saying "hadn't seen that before".

And the search engine is something you use to find old information, but not all the "reposted" information is old news, you need to read the details as sometimes there JUST might be something new that wasn't in similar information posts.

For anyone who checked the forum once in the last three days this was most certainly old information, as this news was reposted several times over the last couple of days.
Why is using the search function so incredibly hard or tiresome that no one tries? Is it the click required to open the quicksearch box in the menubar? Is it the mental prowess required to think up one or two words your post will be about? Clicking the 'Go' button?

1)The search function sucks and I can never find an old thread im looking for
2) I use a modem :( it takes some time sometimes
3) The whole idea of threads is to post not to read really, your not allowed to bring old threads back and your not allowed to start a new one :\. bit of a contradiction.

So well imo if the thread has been posted before and its recent then its simple, close the thread with a helpful suggestion, normal users should ignore the thread once another user has already notified the thread poster that it had already been posted.

If it hasnt been posted recently then I dunno what you would do

Registered Users (prior to being verified) can read but not post. I suppose we could if we wanted to just drop people down to that for the duration.

hmm not a bad idea :)

Let starmonkey code something like that.. I bet he can.. c'mon monkey.. havent seen you post latly

The point I'm trying to make is this...

Repeated news and threads and questions anywhere on this forum are annoying. But to be honest, if us moderators have to read them all every day and have to take action against them everyday and we can do it in a mature, non offensive manner then I'm sure the rest of you could too :)
