A little video card help?

A quick answer would be helpful. My friend just bought a PNY 6800Gt 256mb AGP for $120. Was he ripped off or not, and could he have found a better one for cheaper or close to $120?

The 6800GT is a good AGP video card. Not the fastest or the best, but a good AGP card none-the-less. As for it costing him $120, I would have advised the Radeon HD 2600Pro for under $100 over the 6800GT, as the HD2600Pro is a bit faster, not to mention it supports DirectX 10, whereas the 6800GT is DirectX 9.0c. However, neither card will be able to run newer games at full detail, keep this in mind. If he wants to stick with AGP, thats fine as there are AGP cards out that do a great job, but there is no reason for him to drop a bunch of cash on an older & as some would say, dead technology based video card. If he can return the 6800GT, urge him to do so & get a better card for the money, but if noy, then whats done is done.

Be careful what you say. The 2600 pro might support DX10, but it's at 10 fps with a good processor. I got mine for $50 on sale, and it had an extra 256MB of ram, for a total of 512. As sort of a benchmark, on 1G of ram and a 2 Ghz processor it runs lost coast with about 50 fps Great value for a card, but you could get something much better for that price. As a little bonus it doesn't require any extra power other than what it gets from the pcie slot and is quieter than any card I've ever heard.

The XT is faster and has more memory than the normal PRO.

Of course it goes without saying that just because a card supports DirectX 10, does not mean it's a fast video card. Just giving options for under $120 AGP video cards.

Well, it is probably one of the best value cards out there, but it still only gets 10 fps average on dx10, you're not going to be able to play anything at that speed.
