I never had to reformat my raptor 74g hd. unfortunately, whenever i get to the desktop now, it comes up with the blue screen of death, and restarts the comp, and repeats the process. the error message i get is:

STOP:0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0x80560BBD, 0xF792E9AC, 0x00000000)

When i put the xp cd in however, it says windows cannot detect any drives. in order to reformat do i need to get the SATA drivers on a floppy like when i first installed it? please help. i only have a short time left on this comp!

Yes mate, you need the drivers after a format.

i havent reformatted it yet though.

Oh whoops, ah well, if you are gonna do a format to get rid of the problem, my comment still stands :E

This suggests that installing Service Pack 2 should resolve the issue. It's also possible that it's a problem with your RAM.

Try SP2 if you don't already have it (may need to run it from Safe Mode if you can get in there). If that doesn't work then definitely try the format. If you get the same errors during the XP setup you might want to do a memory test or replace your RAM.

problem is, the comp goes to the BSOD literally seconds from seeing my desktop. i know its missing system files and shits just messed up in general. i cant seem to reformat because when i boot from my xp cd, it loads all the files, and when i try to format or repair, it says windows cannot detect any hard drives. so what the hell should i do? idk where to get the drivers for the raptor either...

nuts to SVP2, that's microsofts answer to everything.

"HELP IM BLEEDING FROM MY EYES"

MS Agent - "ohhh I see...yeah...you'll need to download SVP2"

1. The drivers are not the HDD drivers they’re for your mobo’s SATA connections. You will find them on your mobo driver CD.
2. Have you tried the repair option when booting from the windows disc? I’ve never used it myself, but I assume you don’t need the drivers for that.

cant repair...cant do anything. the asus mobo cd i cant access because i cant get on my desktop long enough to do anything. is there anyway to just format the drive from a floppy or something?

Have you tired pressing F6 as the computer boots and selecting "Last know good configuration", or "Boot in safe mode". Also, how are you posting on this website? From another computer? One with both a CD drive and a floppy drive?

theres a program called spinrite that might be able to help you, but im not sure

1) Unscrew HDD from case.
2) Go outside.
3) Punt HDD into street.
4) Watch as cars run over it.

you must be A+ certified.

hmm so much to learn about hardware repair and anger management from Q_onfused

When you boot from the windows install disk, the first thing it will do is ask if you want to load any hdd drivers, and to press a key if you do. Press said key and have the motherboard disk handy.

ill try that link, but it usually just jumps and asks me to insert the right floppy drive.

and im using an old piece of shit hd that doesnt even have drivers installed on it to talk to u guys lol.

Chris_D, the solution you gave is for when you experience the BSOD on windows installation.

Are you by chance using an nvidia video card? If so, try upgrading or rolling back your video card drivers.

EDIT: Try SP2 also. All the solutions i've found give reference to installing it.

Try that too.

i appreciate the help but i dont think u understand the problem fully. i cant install anything, i cant update or roll back anything. i cant get to my desktop for more then 3 seconds without the comp giving me the BSOD and restarting.

Have you tried safe mode yet? Cause if it is a driver issue, then that should bypass the driver and it'd help you isolate the issue.

Then you could burn a CD with the driver you need, and then fix your PC!

If you still can't do that, then check this out:

http://www.ubcd4win.com/

If you can't isolate the issue from there, then at least you can back up all your files. I know it's saved my ass from a reformat more than a few times!

But does it have
1. A working CD ROM drive
2. A working Floppy Disk drive
?

If so, what is stopping you from inserting you’re mobo driver CD and copying the relevant SATA drivers onto a freshly formatted floppy disk?

His PC isn't booting past the desktop.

Ah, so he has one of those web browsers that lets you post on forums before you boot to the desktop. Or maybe you should have read the quote in my post, or hell, the rest of the thread.

I read the whole thread, did you not see me quote chris? I even laughed at the confused ones oppinions.

I thought by with a CD and Floppy drive, you meant you wanted him to try move some sort of recovery program from the one he's posting on to his bloken one.
