The team behind HL2 modification Nuclear Dawn recently declared in a site update that their project leader, DaveL, has renounced his role as head of the team. The news came alongside a declaration that radical reshuffling of the core game design has taken place, though surprisingly the mod is still heading for a beta release in a matter of months. [br] [br] DaveL's methods had been somewhat controversial within the community, with modders and gamers alike claiming that Nuclear Dawn was being presented in a manipulative manner through the use of tampered screenshots and misinformation. Such accusations cannot be confirmed, however, and according the ND website the sole reason for DaveL's departure is due to him being "no longer in a position to dedicate his full time and attention to the mod". [br] [br] Regardless, the modification is already heading in a different direction under the joint leadership of team veterans Jonathan and Spk. The gameplay has been completely redesigned in the form of a 60-page document, supposedly streamlining the mechanics and making the mod more appealing. However, with such dramatic changes occurring to the very foundations of the modification, the self-proposed beta deadline of early March seems somewhat optimistic.

should I still be afraid that this will still just be vaporware?

I love how we are talking about mod makers as if they are actual professional development teams.

Some of them don't mind, until they're criticized and throw up whiney defenses of only being volunteers.

The new assassin concept looks cool.

Awesome isn't it. Shame modding doesnt count for crap when you want a job that demands 'industry experience'.

Valve often hire mod teams, actually. Plus, if you're pitching a game to a publisher, making a modification to show your skill might just bridge the difference between you and the just-out-of-university gaming graduate.

A lot of game dev companies hire straight from the modding community. I can think of at least 6 HL1 modders that have got hired as a direct result of their mod.

A lot of our team work for the industry, they mostly got hired from modding. In fact, modding is by far the easiest way to get into the industry. A lot of companies don't bother looking at university grads unless they have some decent experience and modding is the best way to get that.

Good stuff. This was one of the best looking mods out there. cant wait to play.

Ha! They finally got rid of him. Hopefully this means less vaporware and more playable.

And the assassin concept just looks like a Psycho Mantis ripoff.

All the Character/Weapon concepts are about as generic and unoriginal as they come.

The actual work is good, but still.
