I've noticed often, that people are "bothered" about the quality of their drawings, insisting its crap and could be better, making excuses for what they've done. Or more often some will post insulting comments of other people's work, especially the artwork done in mod teams, like the concept art. Yet many times the idea's behind it, the actual concept itself, is well planned out and perfectly sound.
So I thought I'd post this thread and show all those I'm talking about, something they may find interesting..
What's my point? These sketches were created by Ralph McQuarrie, for such films as Star Wars, Empire Strikes back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Battlestar Galactica etc.. He was the man responsible for almost all modern designs and is considered one of the best, if not the best there is.
Did he care that his concept sketches looked like this? No, of course not. He was more interested in creating the design than a pretty picture to show off all the time.
So the next time someone insults your work because its not 100% perfect, or you don't feel its good enough, remember Ralph's sketches, the idea's are more important than how pretty you make it, afterall, its only a concept and subject to change, so why spend weeks on it when you'll need to do it all over again anyway
So long as you and your team understand the idea's your trying to get across, then don't worry yourself over being the next Doug Chiang or Craig Mullins with every piece you do, being a work of art. Its not important, concentrate on the design itself, the idea's behind it, don't worry about line thickness or adding fancy backgrounds simply for the sake of emulating the great concept artists out there. Stick to the style you know best and put your time into developing great idea's.
P.S. Yes I didn't include his paintings for a reason.
1) That would be unfair cause their production paintings not concept sketches
2) They were born from these sketches
3) They take so long to do that they are often never done until a design has been locked down, or near enough to its final appearance
