A possible logical (and fair) reason for VUG delay

I don't know if this has been suggested before, but there has finally occured to me a reasonable reason for the long delay at VUG.

Maybe VUG simply wants to have an insane number of boxes shipped in the first week. Perhaps they calculate that the best way to avoid losing many sales is to make sure nearly everyone who just HAS to have it the first week can. They may lose a few sales to steam from the truly impatient, like myself, but they simply calculated that this would minimise their lost sales.

Make any sense?

Sounds plausible, but im pretty sure they would just turn their factories into overdirve and stop publishing games that are out for a week or so. As opposed to delaying the game.

Seems logical. And wishful.

pleasepleaseplease!!!!

but,

probably not... :(

Yea, I truthfully don't think VUG would want to delay the game at all, period. No lie, the remainder of 2004 will be head to head with FPS's; both via console and PC. You have Halo 2, Half Life 2, MOH:pA....I think those are it, but those three are highly anticipated this year.

Perhaps, but preparing those boxes wouldn't delay a gold announcment. There's no real set time frame saying how soon or long a game can be shipped after a gold announcment, and if I recall correctly, Doug stated that when it goes gold we will all know about it right away.

Well, it takes some effort to ramp up a big release. It may be that they are already stamping disks, but they just don't want to talk about it yet. I could easily see how the more product you want to ship in the first release the longer your preparation time. Add to this that they probably don't want to ship until they have had at lease one chance to test it themselves, after all a buggy product could cost them millions.

Don't know for sure, but it sure makes more sense than VUG wanting to sit on a product that will make them millions and at the rapid rate innovation has a finite shelf life. All the while causing more defectors to steam.

Makes sense to me. This certainly doesn't mean that VUG & Valve are getting along. The lawsuit might make this the last game they do together.

I try to keep myself busy and forget about Half Life 2 for weeks at a time. Helps me stay sane, and keeps me from nit-picking every detail.

Again, whats skeptical, is that nobody from both VUG or Valve have come forth to deny these latest Gold rumors.

They've done it so many times in the last few months they've probably given up. ;)

kinda like how there are a shit load of extra burgers laying around at mcdonald's when you're closing?

cept i always took the extra food home and fed my family.

1. How long ago was it that STEAM overall bandwidth jumped above 10000? Gold status was probably declared then, behind closed doors. Why would they pay more for server costs? "It would be a very expensive phonecall." Not verbatim, but what speed did Gabe say then? Anyone?
2. How long do you think Valve would really want all those files on our pc's for? Sure, it would take a pc that was built 10 years from now 1000 years to crack 256-bit encryption(According to Moore's Law of Computing, and processor speed doubling every six months), but has anyone heard of "distributed computing"? 100,000 pc's from now would not take so long. Alot of pc's, who could do that? Uh, ever hear of Blaster? How many pc's where involved in the attack on Microsoft, when Blaster hit? It's entirely possible...just a simple buffer overrun...heck, they could use STEAM as the exploit? Anyone know just how secure STEAM is? And who has really said how high the encryption level is? could be 2-bit encoding, for all we know.

3. HLphp had a new working page today. Valve already pretty much told us, in a matter of ways, that they are listening. Do you think they want us angry at them? Today's new webpage, accompanied with tonight's preload, says the game is real close. What did php say?

Get ready...it's coming. Dump the girlfriend, take your kids to the inlaws, drive just a little bit faster, 'cause one day real soon, when you restart STEAM, your life is going to change.

"Wake up, Mr. Freeman......"

What 'delay' are you talking about? They're testing Release Candidates for bugs and/or show stoppers. That will take as long as it needs to.

Yeah, they have CD Writers on overdrive, overnight burning HL2, because they want people to buy from them and not steam(considering some people are on 56Kb modem). It'll be like GOLD - then instore next few days.

I wouldn't say next few days...more so like the next few weeks.
