A question for you techies

To those of you that have a full understanding of Graphic card malarky and the recent HL2 benchmark presentation:

Will the Nvidia Quadro FX 1000 card suffice for ace HL2 Direct X 9 performance? I bloody hope so.

cheers.

It seems Dx9 and any current Nvidia architecture are just not ment to get along well. I havn't seen any Quadro benchmarks, but I would assume they would be about as dissapointing as all the other current Nvidia benchmarks that have been released.

You could still run it in Dx8, I assume..

These bad results are only comming from the FX/DX9 cards??
Right?

in another machine I have a ATI Radeon 9500 Pro. I suppose it's probably worth me swapping this with the Quadro FX 1000 for better HL2 action??

That's the performance of nVidia vs. ATi
Bad for nVidia users

YES! Very much so
Look at the example. At MAX the 9600 works well and the 9500 is comparable to the 9600

thanks for the input guys. That's helped clear things up a lot.

In fact the 9500 is better than the 9600. 9500 is basically a 9700 with two pipelines disabled. They stopped selling them (9500) because people kept picking them up in stead of more high end cards (9700, 9800).

But it requires a direct conn with your PSU, so you really want something like 360W.

i'm sorry, i have a fx 5600, does that mean i can't use all of the kewl dx9 effects the card is suposed to have???????

No, it means that you'll have to lower the resolution to get a playable framerate. The card has the features - it's a question of how FAST it can push those features out.

Lets Wait and see Nvidia 50.xx Drivers performance, its just a matter of hours now...

imho, the 50 wont fix much, the Nvidia issue is a hardware one not a software. The only thing nvidia can do is to tweak the drivers, making it look a bit shittier but perform better.

I don't think the new drivers are going help those NVidia Cards. ATI's cards were built from the ground up for DX9. Nvidia's FX Range are just 4200/4600's with a bolt-on feature set. The render paths for DX9 on the Nvidia cards are just a mess, all a driver can do is optimise these paths not change the hardware. Halflife2 is probably the first game to really use DX9 as it should be used, No dabling around just full on DX9. The benchmarks show what a real ground-up DX9 card can do. Sure I've seen benchmarks knocking around for Doom3 that show the FX's doing well, so what, doom3 uses Open GL 2.0. Open GL is not the future of gaming on the PC. ID only used Open GL so that the engine could be used easily across different platforms e.g PC, Mac, Console Etc.

I'd like to point out that I'm not a ATI fan. I've always used Nvidia cards but I've become suspicious of Nvidia's claims for a while now and those benchmarks have confirmed my fears. Thats why last purchase was a 9800 non pro. After todays annoucements I am a very happy man for doing my research and jumping ship.

New drivers wont do sh*t. Well, they may make benchmark scores go up drastically, but true gameplay will be just as slow, which is all that really matters. Valve even said for people benchmarking with Half-life 2 to not use the detonator 50.xx drivers because they know nvidia will stick at least some BS into their drivers to fool customers.

I love Nvidia, but they have a lot of catching up to do. ATI would and has used the same tactics when they are this far behind the competition....

Exactly!!

Nvidia Cards for DX8 and Open Gl

ATI for DX9

I know where the future of game is. DX will always be king because its at the heart of Windows and Microsoft.

Open GL is ok but lacking features and DX8 is dead. Nvidia need a new card...end of story.

Nope. A 9500Pro has all 8 pipes enabled just like its older brothers 9700/9800. It just has a 128bit mem where as the 9700P/9800P have 256bit mem.
The plain 9500 does have half its pipes cut but its got the 256bit mem.

Yep... I can read :) The 9600Pro would be better to get though over the plain 9500, but then thats not what were talking about. Im going to go off and ramble to meself in a corner.

Not to be rude or anythting, but there are alot of ignorant people posting...

the Quadro FX 1000 has been around for awhile, it predates dx9.
It was also made when nVidia was the best company around, so all you people who say that since the 5x00 FX series of benchmarks suck that the quadro fx will don't know what you're talkign about.

The quadro FX will not run hl2 well.

Also, drivers mean more than you think.... If you have an nvidia card, install some 3x.xx drivers and see how the run games, then intasll the 45.xx and see how the run games. big difference.
