A Strange Problem...

Okay, I've just stuck a 9800 Pro in my PC as my new rig's been delayed and won't be here for a few weeks. The game runs great, but there's a really weird problem when I crank up the settings.

When I put the settings to high, all high expect lighting the game runs at 30-50fps at 1024x768 with no AA or AF. However, even though the fps is fine, at random intervals all my controls just stop working.

If I'm running forward at the time I'll carry on and will have no control over the keyboard or mouse until it decides to wake up. It's not lag as it happens in single player, and even in multiplayer everyone else is playing fine, moving around, flying choppers, shooting etc. - but I'm stuck here aiming at nothing.

None of this happens when I put the settings down to medium. Obviously that's a fix for it but it's annoying as it's a very playable framerate even at high settings. It doesn't happen in any other game or on the desktop either.

Any ideas?

The very first time I joined a server and spawned, my keyboard wouldn't respond either. I had control of the mouse, but I couldn't move or type or do anything. How often does this problem occur for you? Because you might just need to give it time to adjust to the settings...I had set all my options and jumped into a game immediately after, so it had to optimize itself. Maybe that has something to do with it. Honestly I don't think it has something to do with the settings themself, because I experienced the same thing on medium settings, and there are people who run the game on 9800s with high detail.

It happens at random intervals. At worst every ten/fifteen seconds and sometimes I can go five/ten minutes without it happening. I have been in a server for a good 15 minutes before I gave up. Still, looks like I'll just run at medium now. Still looks great

Did you uninstall the old drivers and install new ones? Reinstalling over old drivers may cause this kind of problem. Try to swap in the old card and see if the problem still happens, just to see if it is the vid card.

try these settings for a 9800 pro

and add this to your shortcut:
+szx 1280 +szy 1024

(so it should look something like this
"C:\GAMES\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx 1280 +szy 1024

hope that clears things up. make sure you have the latest catalyst drivers from www.ati.com too

Well, thank you very much,that pretty much did it The only place it happens now is in the boat bay thing of the carrier. Everywhere is fine, and the game looks absolutely fantastic at 1280x1024 with the settings high

That, was truly...an amazing game. We had a couple of bad rounds early on, when there were only 3 of us in the squad, but when the ranks bolstered a bit we absolutely thrashed the opposition every single round

Hm, looks like I can crank up some of my settings. What kind of FPS do you get with that, Redundant? What's the console command to check FPS?

And man as much as I hear you HL2.net guys talking about how you dominate everybody, I'm going to have to play against you guys sometime.

it's based on driver ability assists and vehicle kill assists (someone in your vehicle kills someone, driver ability I don't know, I get them often as I often drive APC's Blackhawks and Jeeps... but I can't put my finger on how of why I get them)

I notice how that "particularly good round" has your name strewn all around! I should have got the one where I won like 9 awards
hehe just kidding bro. man that game was awesome. we came top three in every game... even when we were losing and it was only Axyon and myself agains all those squads.
