A stupid question

I have a problem installing Half life 2. Sorry this is my first time using the game and i dont have online capabilities, now i dont know if this problem im about to tell u about refers to being online itself.

anyway here goes, after I install half-life 2 (I needed to install a program named steam first) Everytime I try to run the game it says "Error(Main Exception)- steam required dll not found" is this cause the game I have is buggy, or do I get this message cause I need to register the game online first??? do you need to go online to actually play this game?
If that is so is it possible to download the required steam files from another computer, save them to a zip drive and copy and paste the files to my comp?

Hmmm, it does say on the box that the game needs to be registered and activated online. and you will need to d/l steam and set up an acount, there is a way to do this then be able to play offline, but I havnt yet figured it out myself, but as I have adsl it isnt a problem to me anyway.
