I guess this qualifies as art. I made this for my mum's 60th birthday, as she's very into genealogy (traced our family back into the 16th century.) It's basically my immediate family tree (I left out step/half-siblings) with each person's date and time of birth encoded into the circles.

That's really cool, the coded circles remind me of the puzzles in Myst a little.

This is NOT real art! Cheap and nasty! I turn my monocle away from this tacky, tacky shit!

Real art is interpretive! This is just a stylized infographic!

Heh, kidding of course, that looks way cool.

How exactly was it made?

Samon: and yet it has more depth and complexity than the entire plot of Lost.

Vegeta: I set out to make it in PhotoShop, but eventually built it up in 3d Studioand rendered it flat, then had it printed on canvas.

I likes it. Really neat idea for a present.

Now you have to get it tattooed on your back.

As it's an evolution of the tattoos on my wrists, and taking into account that I already have a large tattoo on my back, I can't.

The canvas is 24" x 36"

I originally wanted to do it larger, but my mum doesn't have a spare wall large enough to accommodate it, and it wouldn't fit in my car.

I have a Volvo V50. I could fit a 5' by 3' canvas in it with the rear seats folded flat, but then I would have had to strap the kids to the roof, and there was a lot of fuss made the last time I tried it.

Very cool.

This inspires me, now I want to make a Win7 gadget that uses your trademark circle encoding to show the date and time.

That's excellent Pi, I really like watching your designs evolve.
