Here is a screenshot with the amazingly stupid problem. I have a p4 2.4 ghz, 512 DDR, Ati9600xt. This is REALLY annoying and makes the game non playable because the whole game is like the screenshot of the main menu. I have the current drivers from ati (4.11 i think), my card is not OC'd, and no cheats installed at all. It is really wierd... some of the things show up, some of them are just in a stupid white wire frame. Changing the graphic settings does nothing.

OMG THIS SUCKS! SUCH AN AMAZING GAME (the first parts of the "Route Canal" missions worked flawlessly)

Please please any help?

It also spammed the console with all of these errors saying stuff like: "models/(some model name) could not be drawn, you need to set $model 1 in .vmt file"

It has thousands of those errors for every model on the screen that is not showing up... could this mean those files were messed up? Could a reinstall solve this problem? How can you reinstall if you bought the downloaded version of the game?

thanks for any help

From what I’ve heard, that problem arises because you have a pirated copy buddy..

It does sound a lot like part of a HL2 download got corrupted.

I could make vaguely similar effect using the wireframe option in the game's console but that didn't bring up errors.

I'd check I had recent graphics card drivers as you did, and the recent Direct X 9.0c:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx

Personally, if that didn't work then I'd erase the game and download it again.

To erase HL2, you choose "properties" for it by right-clicking on it in the menu with all the games. It will give you the option of "Delete local game content..." And pressing that will delete it.

(You can also back the game up first using "Backup game files..." so you can change your mind if you want. I wouldn't bother, myself.)

HL2 will stay in the game list, however. I believe this means it will start downloading again if you select it to do that, just like it did the first time you downloaded it.

It's a huge download and will take 10 to 20 hours on most broadband/ADSL connections.

yeah i think your right, since my download only took about 2 hours. when it does download, does it do it in the background? this is NOT a pirated version... i would never do that to valve for all their work (i have silver edition). my directx is updated completely as well.

one question... how big is hl2 supposed to be when you select properties by right clicking?

thanks for your help doomed!

I've seen Steam's monitor (right-click on the little Steam icon to find it) pausing the download when I've run other programs while downloading HL2 content, so you might try starting HL2 downloading and then if you use other programs, start the program then exit it and then take look at Steam's monitor to see if that temporarily paused the download off or not.

Maybe you can use other stuff while HL2 downloads in the background. It'll make internet stuff download slowly as it will use most of the connection.

The main HL2 file is called "Half-Life 2 base content.gcf" or "Half-Life 2 content.gcf". I think the name changes when the game unlocks it, not sure about that though.

You will see it in your SteamApps folder.

Steam says it's disk usage is 838 megs. Windows will say the file is 838 megs or 858 megs depending on which way it counts it.

Short answer is that HL2 on its own is around 850 megabytes.

However, when you choose to back-up Half-Life, then Steam says that the files needed are 3360 megabytes.

The reason for the difference is that the approx. 850 megs one is HL2's main file and the rest of the 3360 megs are the other files HL2 needs to run plus its multiplayer Counterstrike: Source's files.

You can see all the files that would be backed-up highlighted here:

http://horde.whutdufuk.com/The_Spaniard/HL2 Case and Backup/Source Backup GCFs.JPG

I don't which files erasing HL2 will delete. I think it will be the 850 meg one for sure but what else, I don't know.

850 meg will be maybe 3.5 hours to download on 512kbit ADSL and maybe that's all it will need to fix any corruption, or it might need more stuff removed and reinstalled.

Like I say, the full thing is much bigger download but maybe 10 to 20 hours is wrong and it'll be only 3 or 4 hours if it only deletes the HL2 file on its own.

Anyhow, you might as well take a look at the size of the SteamApps folder before and after pressing erase in Steam and that'll tell you how big the download is going to be. Might only be the approx. 850 megs one that goes.

was there ever a solution that worked for this problem, I am having the same problem, I have a p4 3.0 ghz, 1024 DDR 400, 256 Ati9600xt (same card pilotCHUP)... I also have a legit copy... it came with the graphics card... I have all the latest drivers, directX, etc??
