Most nominations THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON 13 nominations, including best picture and director. THE DARK KNIGHT has 8 nominations, including visual effects, cinematography and, of course, Heath Ledger for best supporting actor.

Here's the full list

Another year and once again the academy has rejected my petitions that Transformers 1986 be nominated for every category, every year.

Academy bias against comic book adaptations again rearing its ugly head. Not even a nom for director or picture?

Can anyone explain to me why Benjamin Button got all these nominations if its essentially a pointless film that was done better 14 years ago as "Forrest Gump"?

I'm rooting for Slumdog Millionaire.

As much as I love The Dark Knight... Art direction? Really? It's just ****ing Chicago.

Slumdog millionaire for best pic and heath for best supporting actor otherwise there will be hell to pay :flame:

Because "essentially pointless" is basically a criteria for inclusion in any list of self--flagellating industry love? What's the point of choosing something that people outside the group may have actually thought was notable... then any plebeian could pick the winner.

Good to see that Wall-E wasn't even considered for best picture and that the animation award was created to answer the problem of how the academy was supposed to stealthily stick their noses up at the medium. Piss Piss Poo.

Yah - Wall-E, a movie that should have ended after the first 30 minutes!

For 30 mins. It then descends.

Ok, that's a bit harsh, but the fat ship it's cast of forgettable charatcers seem so grey and paint by no.s after the staggeringly beautiful awesomeness of the opening minutes.

Yeah, they're so grey compared to a robot cleaning up garbage on a desolate planet.

Honestly, I'm behind most of the praise for Wall-E, but people forget so easily that it's still a kid's film. I'm not sure what you're expecting of the characters, I thought they did a pretty admirable job considering.

but people forget so easily that it's still a kid's film.
I doubt the film-makers would fall back on that excuse. There's a difference between making a family film and a kids film anyway. Family films can still be sophisticated, they just try not to go too far over the kid's heads.

Wall-E is weaker than many other Pixar movies IMO, but that just means that other Pixar movies should have been considered for Best Picture before now. The last time that any animated film received as many as nominations as Wall-E (Beauty and the Beast) there was no convenient Animation cubby-hole for lazy judges to overlook.

Well yeah, more or less what I meant. I still don't see how you could deepen the plot or characters much more without going over children's heads too much. Besides which, most of the "sophistication" from family films tends to come from adult references that only older viewers would get, instead of actually making them more complex.

It was far more than just a robot cleaning up garbage :p It was endearing, touching. Pixar at their best. The rest was rather uninspired. Ratatouille maintained the quality throughout. It didn't have any moments that matched the start of Wall-e for me, but it was still very good and from beginning to end and devoid of generic characters.

I kinda hope Downey wins best supporting actor and accepts it as Kirk Lazarus.

Dear Eejit,

I shall be stealing that joke for a podcast I must begin recording in 30 minutes. I hope you do not press charges.

Sincerely,
Sulkdodds (Master Criminal)

As long as I receive my share of the royalties that shall be quite alright old chap.

Oh, congratulations on spelling my name correctly. Did you copy and paste this time?

I've taken to consuming a tablet of 'E' each time I'm required to quote or reply to one of your posts. This tends to imprint things on the memory, at least initially.

But I'm right here

Oh god, I'd love for Ledger and Downey to win best supporting. I can't decide.

Mickey Rourke for best actor.

Gran Torino and TDK got snubbed.
