Is there any way to access protected files (on an admin account, I know the passwords) without booting the HDD they're on? I want to format the drive but I need to backup these files first, and since it won't boot I can't see any easy way of doing that. Repairing Windows on the drive doesn't work, infact that's what caused the problem in the first place (irony is like Microsoft's forte). At the moment I'm running from a fresh install of WinXP on a seperate hard drive, with the other one as slave. I can get into it, but it denies me access to the folders I need. I know this might sound a bit hax but I'm desperate. If I reformat and in the process delete those files, people will kill me. If I don't reformat and thus can't get access to those files, people will kill me :(

You will probably have to use some program to back up the whole hard drive or something. Or you could risk formatting the drive then use a program like getdataback to try to recover the files.
