I was wondering, why isn't this allowed? I mean, I bought a $100 product, thinking I could create a new account, or it giving me serials, and voila, it put the games on an old Steam account! Quite ignorant, I understand, but happend. So, anyone know why VALVe won't allow this?

errrrrr, yes. i completely undrestand what you are saying.... thankyou.
(btw, why would you want to change your account name?)

Can anyone confirm that when steam first came out, you had to use your email address as a username? I made my steam account a very long time ago, and my username is an old email address - from what I can remember, I had no choice but to use my email address as the account name.
I'd like to change mine because the account name is an email address that I don't use any more. At the moment I'm not too bothered because I've changed the contact email.

Yes, early Steam accounts used the contact email address as the account name.

Eventually, you'll be able to change the account name. Valve hasn't indicated when though.

I thought so, although it was a long time ago that I created the account, I was pretty sure I didn't get a choide to enter an account name.

It's annoying though, because I used my 'spam' email address when I first signed up, so I'd prefer to have a real account name.

Got the same problem as you guys, lets w8 and wish that name change will be in some future updates...

i switched from cable to dsl and lost my @comcast.net email address, so my account on steam is my old email address. I don't like that one bit.

I did figure out that you can change the contact email, which I did, so hopefully that will be enough of a security blanket for me. It just seems a bit of a crappy way to have set it up. I should have made a new account, because I bought the Silver package through steam, but i already had the HL: Platinum Edition attached to that steam account. Crap. Should have made a new one.
