Account Name in Player list

Does anyone know how to disable or to NOT have the account name show up in the "player list" when playing in a server? I did a quick search under player list but couldn't find any.
Thanks for any info.

You mean the name you see when you press tab? You can change it to whatever you want by bringing up the console and typing in
name "the name you want to use"
Include the speech marks if you want to put spaces in your name.

If you mean you want to not have any name show up for you in the player list, tough, you can't. Same goes for steam id's in the status list. But then you would only want to do this if you were up to naughty chinanigans, so no worries eh?

nah I think he means the player list as in ESC > player list

I have no idea how to get rid of it. Some people just don't have their names there, but I always do.

How long have you had Steam? It might be to do with the friends list.

You are right, dekstar. I had Steam since November of last year and I remember signing on to the 'Friends' network at one time. I'm just worried about my account getting hacked - since they have my user name they could guess the password? Does that even make sense?

Thanks.

Well as long as you make your password nice and secure then you'll never get hacked.
Also before you change your password make sure that you have no keyloggers on your computer, since those are designed to steal passwords.

Also another good idea is to go to steam settings and make sure that 'save my username and password' is checked so you don't have to keep putting it in (another way to get round keyloggers).
I haven't had my account stolen yet, because I try and keep it as secure as possible. Admitted, there are a lot more things VALVe could do to keep accounts secure (like having an option of a secondary (and hidden) email when signging up where all emails (including "do you really want to change your password to: ..." security emails) are sent, instead of your primary one.

Also again, it's VALVe's job, so they could do things like sending validation of password change emails that you have to click a link before it accepts the change, etc.
But really it's all down to luck. There's a chance you'll get your account stolen anyway, but it's VERY rare. And by very, I mean you've probably more chance of winning the lottery.

EDIT: Password guessing is hard to do. Hackers (and by hackers I mean people who hack into your account, not cheaters) usually brute force their way into accounts. This is done by using a program that goes through every combination of letters/numbers possible until it gets the right one. Only problem is that takes ages, so people often just go through dictionaries and guess your password that way. As long as you don't make your password easy (numbers instead of letters, letters instead of numbers), or anything to do with your name, then you're going to be fine.

as long as you have a decent password you will be fine i.e. don't set password to : password :rolling:
