STEAM® COMMUNITY OPEN FOR TF2 BETA
September 13, 2007 - After a successful trial period, Valve is proud to announce the public launch of the Steam community features, an expansive set of social networking and online multiplayer features available for free on Steam, as it prepares for the launch of the Team Fortress 2 beta, which is scheduled to begin on Monday, September 17, 2007.
The Steam Community lets gamers create a personal profile-a Steam ID-complete with a photo or avatar, biographical details, favorite lists, and other information. Community members can add peers to a personal Friends List that shows in real-time who's online and available to chat or play a game. Accessible from within the Steam client or while playing a game, the Friends List makes it easy to invite friends to chat, play a game, or join a group.
Team Fortress 2 is the successor to the grand daddy of class-based multiplayer action games and the multiplayer component of The Orange Box, a unique compilation of new games from Valve. The Orange Box also includes Portal and the full collection of Half-Life 2 games released to date for just $50 on PC and $60 on the next generation consoles.
Starting Monday, September 17, the Team Fortress 2 (TF2) beta opens to those who pre-purchaser The Orange Box via Steam and save 10% of the regular price. The Steam community features will allow TF2 players to track detailed player and team statistics and achievements records.
To explore the Steam community features, install the Steam client available at www.steampowered.com. Click the Community tab within the Steam interface and take a tour of the features and create a profile.

Why you think we got the beta coming Monday, gotta help them test out those features aswell ;)

Now keep your hopes up, but I wouldn't read too into that statement.

Remember that TF2 tracks a few things such as your longest kill streak, consecutive headshots and the like. 'Achievements' might simply refer to this set of notable accomplishments. They don't say anything about achievements in the other games, after all.

But we can still hope there will be specific achievements.

First of all: They added support for Achievements in Steam directly
Second of all: Greg said there was going to be Achievements, yes Xbox Live-style achievements.
Third of all: This e-mail confirms it.

If they meant only meant stats there would be no reason to write "and achievements".

Geez, Gabe could be standing at a conference saying a "A Meteor is hitting the earth in a few seconds" with a meteor in the sky outside the window heading towards earth, and you would still say "You're reading to much into it".

It's called basic sentence structure.

"The Steam community features will allow TF2 players to track detailed player and team statistics and achievements records."

This sentence says specifically that it will track records for TF2 players.

Now, if you can point me to a source that expands upon this concept, we can call it an argument.

I also enjoy your all-encompassing reaction to a single point in a single post I've made.

i talked to Greg, he told me that there gonna be "Achievements" for the Orange Box on Steam.

TF2 has the same achievements on the PC as it has on xbox. You'll be
able to view all the achievements you've acquired on the Community web
site, as well as extended stats on how you play the game.

Subject: Regarding TF2 Achievements

Hi Gabe,

Was wondering if you could clear something up for me, when you said in
your press release that the Steam Community would feature TF2 Stats and
Achievements, are we then talking Xbox Live-style Achievements?

Best Regards,
Thomas Larsen

So can we start calling this confirmed? Oh and don't even begin on me with "He only mentions TF2!11".

He only mentions TF2. Exclamation mark; eleven.

But really, with Steam Community up and running, I wouldn't be surprised at all if we get 'em for the rest of the games too.

While I find the absence of their mention odd, it certainly seems logical that they will be.

I kinda wonder if they'll have any exclusive ones - considering the 1000 point limit on Live! restricted the number of things they could do.

Because i only asked for TF2, and not the Orange Box.

They already said they're going to take up the fight against Microsoft with thier gamertags and what not, no reason to do it halfassed.

And i think it'll be the same ones as the Xbox ones, perhaps they might want to alter some depending on the version, because something that might not be an achievement in the PC version certainly could be on the Xbox version.

Uh, yeah. But the press release was the same, as well. Achievements have only been mentioned in relation to TF2. Nevertheless, we're more than likely to see them elsewhere.

'Taking up the fight' seems like a good reason to include more, dontchaknow. Along that same vein, there probably wont be any points - or at least not the same 'points' as on Live! - so why should they care about playing it even?

Yup, sounds like they are going to add achievements.

No they won't add to your gamerscore on your XBL gamertag, since this isn't a Games For Windows title.

Would be nice if it was displayed on steam community.

"XnameX completed all the acheivements in EP2!"

More work to do to keep myself occupied. Although it does mean I have to go out of my way to do stupid things like race Dog. o_O

Well I for one would be glad that Gabe would be the one saying that, because a few seconds to him (and valve) is years to everyone else.

Curses. None of my friends are buying into the PC version, they are all getting the 360 versions. I was hoping to prove that I am actually a competant gamer (I get owned in multiple 360 games).
