Hi

My last computer has just died (hard drive is completeyly gone, can't retrieve anything - most of everything else is beyond repair too - it's a long story) and i've ordered a replacement (the computer im using to post this can barely run firefox without crashing, nvm tf2 :| ).

I just wanted to make sure - I won't lose my achievements when i reinstall tf2 on a new hard drive will i? The achievements ARE stored onto my steam account rather than on the drive you install tf2 onto, arent they? I'm fairly sure i'll keep them, then it occured to me that in various updates a load of files bearing the titles of achievements were downloaded and now im slightly worried - anyone can confirm wether i'll keep achievemnts on a new install of tf2 on a new harddrive?

don't worry.
achievements are activated through your comp (so u can use 3rd party programs to finish them all in 1 click ) :D but the data is stored in steam's servers
so u won't lose any achieved achievements

Since Steam accounts are linked to servers, you shouldn't have a problem. The only thing you'd have to worry about would be savegames, and since TF2 doesn't have savegames...

Well actually you would have to worry about custom maps and sounds and all the miscenallaneous paraphanalia that people install. But your achievements should be fine.

Completed achievements are definitely fine but I'm not sure about your progress on achievements you haven't gotten yet. I don't know about TF2 but I did lose some Portal achievement progress when I moved computers and lost the folder.

Progression on incomplete achievements will be lost, for example say you have to get 100 kills and you've got 50 you will lose the 50 kills and have to start again. Only achievements that are completed are sent to Steam servers and saved. Backup you current Steam folder so you don't lose your progression on achievements.

Alright, thanks a lot for the info all :D

It's a shame i'll lose my progress since i was about 2 points of getting the reflected projectiles achievement for pyro which would have taken me to milestone 2 - still, thats just my luck i guess :p

I'l gladly help anyone get an achievement if they can help me get the one more i need to get my backburner once i get my new computer :)

The easiest way to get that achievement is to use your airburst on sticky nades. Up to eight reflected projectiles in one burst, repeat 20 times, victory.

Ok, this has little to do with my original question, but it relates to the problem that caused me to ask said original question in the first place, ergo i cant be bothered starting a new thread :p

I have managed to (sort of) salvage my old computer into some kind of (sort of) working order by transplanting various old parts from a number of old computers and components friends didnt want any more because they were too old/crap. This is just a stop-gap measure till my new computer arrives, but my question is: How well do you think TF2 will run on a 128mb GeForce FX 5200? (2.8Ghz processor, 1GB ram) How crap is this going to be? I guess i'll find out soon enough once i finish installing drivers for all these new (or rather - old) components, but er, how bad am i looking at here? playable?
