That's what I'm doing right now. I'll be registering a domain at Bluewire.net soon and I've joined Clickbank.com's affiliate program. The problem with this career is finding the right information to get you off on the right foot. e-books galore, and most of those who write these affiliate training guides want $. There are a few guides that I've found that are free, but very rarely it is you'll find any information for free in this business. It's just too lucrative, so I can't blame them really. This is how literally EVERY business online promotes their products and services, even Wal-mart to some extent. Keyword research, traffic, and a marketing niche is the recipe to be successful in this business. I've started off with Bum Marketing for now to some success.

There's alot to learn and I've got a major headache right now as I type this.

Here's a "brief" explanation from Wikipedia on affiliate marketing

Hard to learn though. At least for me. To put it in perspective, many people go for a Bachelor's degree in internet marketing compared to all what I have learned from just purchasing some e-books.

If all goes well, this will be my new career.

On that note, is there any way I can promote HL2.net? I can start a marketing campaign for HL2.net if it was possible.

Sounds like one of those jobs I wouldn't be able to live with doing. It'd eat me up inside.

Isn't this the online version of a Tupperware party? I'd be wary if I were you.
No. It is a legitimate business.

Your thinking of MLM (multi-level marketing). Better know as a pyramid scheme.

You don't sell anything directly. Ever bought anything at Amazon.com? You likely bought that product from an affiliate. You never knew a third-party middle-man made a commission did you?

Frankly, that's just the way I like it, because I hate dealing with idiots. :cheese:

Almost everything you buy on the internets is a result of affiliate promotion. There's no phone calls, inventory, "tupper-ware parties", just me, my articles, and my website.

Tupperware is totally legitimate. Has been for eons (it's been around since the 1950s). The smart thing about the business plan companies like these have, is that they are guaranteed sales since they sell their stuff to resellers. Think about that for a sec.

Yeah, but your limited to just "tupperware" in businesses like these. Restricted to just one "marketing niche". The internets has billions of people and billions of products to promote, AND they are free to promote too, even if you never buy them or know nothing about them. Those are the major differences.

That's why MLM pyramid schemes like "tupperware parties" always fail. In affiliate marketing, there are no down-lines, up-lines, just you, your articles, blogs, and your websites. You don't have to buy some crappy product you really don't care about.

Bah, just propaganda. Lies, ALL LIES! I'll show you a snapshot of my clickbank account come the end of the month.

Those WallStreet guys just want control, and to do that, they spread LIES!!!!! To keep the masses properly misinformed is just what they want. After all, large corporations still need people to mop the floors, work the warehouses, and flip-burgers. For without the working class, the economy will surely fail. Or at least THEY will anyways.

Erm, you're gonna be in sales. Being able to lie is a non-negotiable requisite.

I'll be sure to come by to beg a few thousand off you when you make your first million, Dragonshirt.

I'll always have a special "spot" for my HL2.net pals Jintor. And no, not the ignore list either. :D

It's called "quote mining" Just write some articles with quotes from the sales pitch of the product your supporting. That's not lying.

Unless of course the company from whatever product your supporting is lying, but then that would be "false-advertising" which would be liable for a class-action lawsuit if the customer is injured or hurt in any way. Most of time when this happens, they simply fail to read the "Terms and Agreement" pages though. That's not my department, as I only promote. Affiliates are not liable. We do not make the sales pitches.

If you stuff me with cookies I will stuff you with fist!

Adware and spyware is illegal in this business. Anyone caught using these methods to lure traffic is banned from the affiliate network, all commissions revoked, and a possible jail-sentence. They have ways to track programmers, spyware distributors, and users who resort to these methods.

Personally, I can't wait for the day when this garbage is rooted out permanently, because these people are stealing MY commissions! Not to mention, I'm sick of all the trojans out there trying to infect my PC.

If you want to do it, go for it.

Don't forget to mail a check home to your internet family.

How is it a scam? You don't have to pay a dime to start doing this as long as you know what your doing. (That wasn't my case) Anyone could start doing this for free in their spare time.

Nobody else is benefiting from this just starting out alone.

Just look for yourself. Amazon.com, Clickbank.net, and virtually every other online merchant has an affiliate program you can sign up for free. I didn't make this thread to "promote" anything, just to let everyone else know what my "side-job" is. Because HL2.net is cool like that. :)

Sounds like risky business. Why not just get a normal job?

I guess because I like an adventure. ;)

Truth is, no normal job can make the kind of money I'm going to make, and besides, it's not at all risky. The only way you can fail is if nobody sees your blogs, ads, website, hence the reason why traffic, content, and keyword research is important. Even then, you don't lose money by just Bum Marketing. (Promoting without a website or without using paid advertising. a.k.a Pay Per Click or PPC) Worst case scenario is you simply don't make any money.

A good .info domain is only around $2.00 a month or so though. I'm gonna find a good provider like godaddy or BlueWire.

Just not here.
Don't worry, I know the mods here better than that.
HL2.net is just for fun. Not business.
Besides, HL2.net is a relatively small community focused on only one niche, (videogames).

Not a very lucrative site tbh. Especially with all the angry mods about, I'd have my post/sig deleted in minutes, and probably banned too.
No, I'd almost assuredly be banned.
