the good: beta is ramping in the next few weeks to include thousands of players, veterans limited to 300 so that means there'll be plenty of other spots to fill

the bad: open beta not till close to release: mar 2008 ..speculating feb open beta at the earliest


international servers

the bad: servers for north america and europe separate, only way to play on non regional server (say US player on european server) is to buy that version of the game (so US player we need to buy european version of game)

the bad part deux: region based censorship/game rating to be enforced server side ..so german players on european servers wont see the same content as non german europeans ..possibility of US players playing on european servers that dont have to abide by ESRB? = boobies/sex/hahah jack thompson

the bad part trois: european half-life2 members wont get to play/hack to bits Stern

the good: not a heck of a lot except that the decision to separate between north america and european versions was made due to latency issues and ensuring the best possible player experience (re: 300 ping not enjoyable)

Anyway yeah, read this stuff and I'm already praying I get picked. Who knows I might get lucky and you might get one of the vet spots. Maybe we'll have to sacrifice a few virgins and drink goat blood to increase our chances.

Why don't you buy the game from an online shop that ships internationally? that's what I did for WoW to play on the US servers, I lived in France when it came out. Plus their lame security check was that you had to have a home address in the US but they only verified zip codes. All I had to do was put 90210 because that was the only zip code I knew lawl...

Err, no, you can buy WoW over here (and I did), and every other MMO I know of. What I mean is, set up some servers to play the game on in Australia or New Zealand or somewhere around here so us loyal southern hemispheric (it's a word) MMOers don't have to use the US servers and get our over-geared asses handed to us whenever that rogue who appeared to be approaching from 30 odd feet away was actually behind us the whole time, shanking away happily as we stood there waiting for the game to kindly let us know so we could maybe do something about it (I'm exaggerating of course... but seriously, that's happened).

And yeah, I'm aware of the Oceanic servers on WoW, but they're in name only. They're still based in the US, it was just a way of getting players from this region on the same server and raiding/grouping/PvPing together. Too bad it went up after the rest of us had already established ourselves on other servers and couldn't be ****ed submitting ourselves to Blizz's grindfest another time around, or worse, PAYING them for the "privelege" via a transfer.

I want a beta invite! Cpt. Stern any news on beta invite stuff? I signed up for them waay back when the sign up page was first put up, but I haven't heard a peep out of them other than getting the clan of conan newsletters.

I am greatly looking forward to this one. I need a new MMO to hold my attention, and most have been failing recently. Signed up for the beta a while back, but nothing yet.
