What do you think of the AI of the Combine soldiers in Half-Life 2? I found it pretty impressive myself, that they would take cover, try to surround me, and flush me out with grenades. However, sometimes they would just run straight at me, into my shotgun blast. Overall, even when they were being stupid they were really fun to fight though. What do you think about the AI?

Pretty dissapointing when they're in closed-up hallways.

I've seen them use their AI better in that default gm_ map. :(

It could be better tbh, but only a minor flaw in the game really.

Mind you, that this game was released back in 2004. What's with all the questions? I'm sure if you look back at old threads, we've covered EVERYTHING there is to do with HL2. Just search, and no, DO NOT bump an old thread while you're at it.

It's not good, but holy hell the AI in the original "Half-Life" was brilliant. What the hell happened there? :/

i agree it is something that needs work but it is to me it's fine the way it is

I've never noticed them taking cover, but their simplicity can be funny sometimes.
"Huh, my 2 buddies with Pistols just ran around that corner and took a close range Shotgun to the head. I think I'll go around that corner, to see what all the fuss is about!"

Jeez, look at the way this guy talks with his 500's post co-JOIN DATE AUGUST 2004?

uh

Anyway, I felt that the Half-Life AI was far more impressive for the time than Half-Life 2's. HL2 can have some good group and flanking behavior, but it still has this:

I never recall that working with enemies on foot. Just that one video.

Does all enemy AI respond that same way when you disrupt line of sight? Or is it just scripting being abused in that one scenario?

It's also a mounted gun with no possibility for motion. That plays a large part.

I thought they fixed that problem ages ago :\

Brilliant as in running around and chucking grenades?

HL AI is frustrating if it were implemented in today's games. The last thing I want is my enemies running away from me and across the map every single possible second. The worse part is the Grunts are actually fast runners in the game.

HL AI actually wasn't that bad, imo. Very impressive at the time.

You also have to remember that marines in Half-Life soaked up a lot more damage than your average Combine transhuman did. You can see the AI in HL2 do some pretty nifty things if they live long enough or you spawn a large NPC battle.

Overall though, not enough retreating. I liked that I had to chase and gun down some bastards in the first game.

The AI in the original Half Life was great. Flanking, plenty of thrown grenades, and good coordination kept me on my toes. However, the Combine just felt like bullet sponges to me. I suppose they'd do better if they were in open areas; but there isn't a single large, open battlefield that offers my enemies any opportunitys to challenge me. :|

AI in HL2 was definitely lacking especially considering that the maps were more interactive. I wanted to see enemies taking advantage of the physics (as a testament to combine's stupidity in physics, zombies at least throw stuff at you), I wanted to be challenged and frustrated (at least these guys should take good cover and fall back once in a while). At some point, you start to see those Combines as that of the Soldier in Team Fortress 2: All muscle (in this case, all uniform and equipment), but no brains.

They are so easy to kill and play around such that you start to feel pity for them. It ruins the enjoyment of combat. I do not want to feel pity when I'm using the super gravity gun mowing down dozens of them. I want to feel good, not sorry for them.

Compared to most other AI, the Half-life AI system is incompetant on a number of differant levels.

I mean seriously, a Shotgun shock-trooper on hard difficuilty walks up to your position of cover, and you send a few SMG bullets into his head. It's so ridiculous it's humerous.

The first game was frighting and mysterious, and it was fun to play. The AI were difficuilt to engage and pushed you to the limit on some levels: they exploited everything there is to exploit when you're in an eclosed, dark and eerie facility deep underground: The creatures were fearsome and drove you to the edge, and that's what made Half-life and its sequals and expansions so popular: Half-Life 2 ruined that experiance, but I have to say the story-line is alot easier to follow and the elements of a simulation testing Humanities will to suvive is intresting, but the core and Rock-hard elements of drunken joy are gone.

Dude, what's up with your double-posting and broken quote tags? You've done that twice in a row.

Wait..are you talking to me? Because that isn't a double post, and you'le find the "broken quote" is used quiet alot: instead of messing up the thread and duplicating huge amount of text in a quote and then posting a mutual little sliver of wrighting infront of that text as a "quote" is stupid: i'd much rather keep it short by just pulling out the bit I want to comment on.

So shut up. You make HULK ANGWY!
