The incinerated partial remains of at least 274 American troops were dumped in a Virginia landfill, according to government records, The Washington Post reported on Thursday.
Air Force officials said that the dumping was hidden from families who had given authorization for the remains to be disposed of in a respectful and dignified manner, according to the newspaper.
There were no plans to inform families, officials told the newspaper.

This is pretty damn disrespectful.

Saw this on the news tonight, was disgusted

Didn't expect to read this. That's shocking. :|

Based on my experience so far with the Air Force, this seems right. They are pretty lazy.

At least they'll all have company down there

According to records the military gave The Post, between 2003 and 2008, 976 fragments from 274 personnel were cremated, incinerated and dumped in the landfill. An additional 1,762 remains, which could not be DNA tested because of damage from explosions, were gathered from the battlefield and dumped in a similar manner, the Air Force told the newspaper.
Isn't this the equivalent of medical waste? I'm as much against desecrating the dead as the next guy, but... I don't know. It's probably a symptom of the language used, but "fragments" doesn't sound like anything more than a finger. Especially the bits that couldn't be DNA tested - that stuff is a foregone loss no matter how hard you try to recover it to a body. If they were dumping whole limbs or organs, I would be more than happy to be mad, but I just don't see the reason for an outrage here.

That's the impression I got too, and I think that's the official stance on the matter.

Of course the media is going to hype it up. You would think that it would be better to maybe dispose of the ashes at sea or spread them on the grounds of Arlington Cemetery. That's kinda like burying them. I think its the Landfill part that causes most of the uproar.

No, I think it's the fact that the families were uninformed of what was happening.

When a bunch of human bodies get turned into gumbo who's family do you notify about what you do with the cleanup?

they deceived the families into thinking they disposed of the bodies in a respectful manner. dumping them into a landfill isnt respectful

why would they hide it from the families if it was a respectful means of disposal?

Hey mom and pop, here is a piece of a thumb and some ear that might be your son's or might be another solider or some random Afghani civilian, or maybe a part of a dog that was in the wrong place.
