Al Qaeda plot to kidnap Russell Crowe

Actor Russell Crowe has revealed he was told he was being targeted by suspected al-Qaeda terrorists who wanted to kidnap him ahead of the 2001 Oscars.
The threat led to him being tailed by FBI agents during the filming of two of his movies.

Crowe told Australian GQ magazine that when told of the threat it "was the first conversation in my life that I'd ever heard the phrase al-Qaeda".

At the time, the Hollywood actor had never heard of al-Qaida or its reclusive leader. But Osama bin Laden, it seems, knew all about Russell Crowe.
In one of the more unlikely terrorist plots, the Oscar winner has revealed that he was a kidnap target for the network, and that the FBI was so concerned about his safety that it gave him protection for four years.

The FBI told him that terrorists had devised a "cultural destabilisation plan" that involved seizing high-profile actors.


However, Crowe remained unconvinced about the level of danger he was in. "I never fully understood what the **** was going on," he told GQ.

Yes - its true. I remember seeing on television those years before with the FBI meeting with Russel to say that this was what was happening. FBI must have told him to be quiet, as Al Quada was not mentioned back then, only that som1 had a go at kidnapping him.

Btw - that would have been the stupidest thing that Al Quada could do. It would not destabilise our culture. Just make so many more Australians want to go and kill terrorists.

I suppose it's a bit of redundant news now, it's only come to light after 4 years. Wonder if they have any similar plots today? Maybe they could do us a favour and kidnap some unwanted celebs?

Don't believe it. As an IRA terrorist said to the British once, 'You guys have to be right 100% of the time, while I only have to be right once.'

I think that a dirty bomb let off somewhere significant (and hell of course I hope it never happens) will be the next thing that Al Quada do. These guys don't think in terms of days or minutes, but in terms of years. A dirty bomb using even medical waste that is radiactive, would cause so much panic and disruption (because its 'radioactive', even if nothing like an atomic bomb) and it would take months for the area to be cleaned up. If they did this in Times Square New York or basically any significant commercial centre, that would be another huge hit.

As much as Al Quada has been smashed, they only need a few people to do something like this. So we should not let our guard down. Atm they are focussed on Iraq, apparently......
