Alcatraz....In the Game?

deep man deep

I think someone mentioned this earlier, and it turned out just to be a coincedence.

Actually the main theory is that the prison in HL2 is actually based on Alcatraz. A few of the people here who have actually been to Alcatraz noticed a similarity in the design of that particular level and the building work at Alacatraz.

It won't be the only location in the game based on a real life location either. Remember this pic? It doesn't get that much of an airing anymore, and it's not often discussed...

but this big big boat is actually based on a real big big boat. I think it was mentioned in the first Gamespy preview. So I think it's quite possible that the prison in HL2 is based on Alcatraz. It's certainly not outside the realms of possibility considering all the facts.

of course, every movie/game with a jail in the history of the world is loosely based on alcatraz, so....

we'll just have to wait and see. I doubt it would actually *be* alcatraz, since we seem to be in a fictional setting to begin with....but maybe it's not REALLy fictional, and...OMG

Probably just a generic prison design which would look similar to most people.

Alcatraz in europe ? uh ? :) every jails looks the same

Yeah, VALVe were really chuffed about that. Turns out that the boat was crewed by a bunch of HL megafans. They let some of the VALVe guys onboard to do arty-farty things. Pictures and stuff.

Yeah.:E

Seeya.

In the PC Gamer preview it showed the concept art of the interior of a "gulag", So I'm guessing that the screenshot is a kind of barracks for the workers of the gulag.

Well, maybe you start out in City 17, fight a while, then get on the boat (all by urself surrounded by aliens and zombies), then go to aclatraz island, and maybe travel to the mainland.

Alcatraz could be like a combine base.

Don't know and TBH I don't really care if it is or not :p

or where Gordon has been taken and tortured and all his weapons taken from him and he most escape ala Macgyver (sp)

I have a strong feeling that we will begin the game on one of those boats ...

Half Life 2 = Europe

Alcatraz = Not Europe.

It's not Alcatraz.

Just a generic penal facility.

Just because Alcatraz is in a different location doesn't mean Gordon won't go there. He has been known to be transported to very distant locations before.

Anubis

Perhaps HL2 starts off with Gordon Freeman incarcirated in Alcatraz and his services are needed in City 17.

If so I demand some prison gaurds to have these lines:

"Guard: Hello everyone, I am a park ranger and I will be leading you
on the tour. All of the park rangers here at Alcatraz were at one
time guards, myself included. My name is John Johnson, but everyone
here calls me Vicky. Will you please follow me"

Xen not Earth...... get the picture.

Wow, that post could hardly have made less sense. I, for once, agree with Magnetichead.

What he is saying in a sense is that just because Alcatraz is somewhere else besides the "main" area of the story of HL2 that it cant be Alcatraz.

Im saying HL1's main story was based on Earth but we still went to Xen.

Anything is possible its a game for crying out.

Aknot: People are taking it way too literally, though. Trying to find out what specific city in Eastern Europe City 17 is. It's INSPIRED by east European cities and architecture, just as this prison will probably be INSPIRED by Alcatraz.

O I know. BUT Mr.Magnetichead statement is way off base. Who is to say Gordan does not travel the world and visit various places and times. To say one thing is not included because it does not belong just from the small bit of information we have recieved is incorrect.

Xen, like Xena...sounds like a Z but its not! and without the cool spinning disc shokrum she had...

yah i still do find it odd that ati is doing an alcatraz thing tomorrow and the hl2 pics look strikingly similar...but who knows.

Because it wouldn't make any sense.

The combine are in Europe, you deal with them there, you dont swan off to the other side of the world. Also what would be the point in setting up a base on or going to Alcatraz?

Its not like its a strategic position or even accesable without boats/aircraft.

im sure i read somewhere that halflife 2 will be like half life one in that there will be know level breaks and that u do all the travel (hence vechicles) that suggested to me at least that there wouldnt be any teleproting about, and i think then the distance between city 17 and alcatraz is big enough to rule it out

of course this is just what i believe is ment from the interviews and it is more than likely that im wrong lol

I posted before in a thread that HL2 will start in a prison in NEW MEXICO, 120 M underground levels.

Errr why not? I mean its "Science Fiction". Nothing has to make sense in this worlds/time view. Maybe the Government closed Alcatraz for a reason. Some sort of underground lab there. Like I said it doesnt have to make sense. To say soemthing doesnt make sense in science fiction is wrong. He could have a timeslip teleporter (just made that up) and have to go to Alcatraz because an escaped alien is there and breeding. Or maybe the Alien/Government (bad government) kidnapped Kliener and have him there. The possibilities are endless.
