Will Wright is the rare exception, a 47-year-old superstar developer responsible for the creation of millions of virtual cities and people through his best-selling Sim titles (Sim City, The Sims and The Sims 2). He?s poured seven years into his next project, the ambitious videogame Spore, due to ship this fall, in which players pilot the development of life from a single cell to an intergalactic empire. We joined him for lunch in New York City to chat about his magnum opus, evolution, and why videogames of the future will play us as much as we play them.

A massive 8 page Interview with Will Wright in which he speaks about research and technology which he is using to make this game. The main thing from which I was totally shock that he has spent a lot of time researching the SETI, search for extraterrestrial intelligence to give the characters a unique look.

I couldn't be more excited tbh, probably my most anticipated game of 2007, aside from ut2k7 and Bioshock

Even if this bombs, I'll still buy it.

But, it's by Will Wright, when has he ever made a shitty game?

I must say, I wasn't interested at first, but now I am :D Can't wait for this.

So can you "win" at this game? I just don't see much depth to it, as soon as you reach the end of evoloution, there won't be anything to do anymore? Seems much like an RPG, where you level up and customise - and that's pretty much the only enjoyment.

I've been ridiculously hyped about this game for like two years, I wish it could just come out already

I doubt there will be a true end, after all you have a whole galaxy to explore and conquer!

From the way they talk about it, it ends when your imagination dies.

EA has me over a barrel. It's obviously an amasing game but I refuse to buy it as EA is the publisher. I can only hope that by the time Spore comes out I'm burried under a mountain of work.

My personal hope is that it actaully HAS everything tehy say it will in the final product. it woulnd't be the first time EA (or a couple of others) promised something and didn't put it in (which, if they'd taken more time, would have been able to)

The following is simply my opinion. I'm not dogging the game or people that are really hyped for the game.

I'm going to deflate my hype balloon. I was really excited for this game, but I just asked myself why. I'm sure it will be a good game and everything. I just don't think it will keep me interested for very long simply because I'm loosing massive amounts of interest in gaming every day. I'm also not into building my own creatures and buildings. I'm not creative like that. That's the only turn off for me.

If the populous parts are as deep as populous and the civilization parts are as deep as civilization, etc. then it might be worth it to me to check it out. If each section is a bastardized subset of the original then it won't be. That will be the make or break factor to me personally.

I hope this game is everything everyone wants it to be. I like Will and hope he succeeds here. I also like the procedural programming and the implications it could have on other games.

This is without competition my most anticipated game of 2007. I am gonna take at least a week off work to properly play it when it comes out. Can't wait!

I fell really awkward, seeing all the hype, while I'm not hyped at all o__O

I have a strange feeling that it'll be majorly overly simplified like Pirates or Black & White 2.

those games were overly simplified because, Players assume they will be GOD and we all know it's all about war between god and evil, if they have been nice they will rise if they desire something evil there will be fall of believers.

I hope to God not.

You won't, it's totally different and unique it's on you how u make your player? a week or strong and if you read the interview properly, Wright clearly mention it's the combination of Three Genres.

lol, trying to boycott EA wont really effect their sales.

You shouldest not buy a game just because its being published by someone you dont like. Thats just silly.

Sadly, EA has presumably already ruined this game, in new interviews on IGN, it appears that they've removed the ability to have water civilizations etc and water-creatures..
My guess? Either it's been removed due to time constraints, or for a further expansion, either way, I blame EA, considering it was shown in videos already in I think 2005 or 2006?

ZOMG, those evil EA execs have removed a feature from a game still in production.

Is there anything that Wright can't sim?!

Huh, now that I think about it, EA are publishing all of the games that I hope to buy this year.

I'll still buy it. But I'll hate EA for it.

"Spore fishing communities destroyed as the galaxies aquatic life vanishes, people check alpha centuri for any new galactic highways being built. Vargons have no comment."

I CANT WAIT.

All the delays are driving me crazy.

They took out the water civilizations?!

I thought water was only ever a stage of evolution. e.g. water-based creatures evolve into a more advanced land-dwelling race.

But underwater races would have been awesome. Are there still the potential for wings too? Cause "wings" was a word bandied around before we really knew much about the game, and we haven't heard much since.

Wow, didn't realize he's spent 7 years working on this game. It should definitely be one to look out for.

Taboo, yup, atleast that's the word going around on all the major Spore forums, because of an interview on IGN.

Dey better at the very least put water in as downloadable content or something...
