(Note to mods: If you find this thread too offensive concerning the beta-talk policies here, feel free to lock it. But AFAIK discussion is allowed, as long as you don't spoil, post or link to anything with screenshots or where to get it, and such.)

Am I the only one who've entered one site too many and stumbled upon lots of screenshots and character information about stuff contained in the leaked beta?

I went to a site a while after 30th Sept. and it contained some screenshots from the beta..
I was quite sad about the delaying of HL2 and decided to check the screenshots out, after all I was very curious about the beta but I haven't DLed it yet. Of course, one thing lead to another. I saw more and more characters that I hadn't seen before, "new" designs and stuff..

I was frustrated about getting this spoiled, still I cannot blame anyone but myself and maybe the guys who stole the beta.

I didn't visit the site for a very long time, until earlier this week.. I was in the same exploring mood like the last time I visited the site and I noticed they had more information about this, weapons and characters. I thought "Hey, the game's not gonna be released in months, and it's just a freaking game.. Doesn't matter if I get to know just a little more about the games content".

Of course with my usual luck I've pretty much got a few weapons, lots of characters and enemies spoiled with screenshots and everything.

I still have no one to blame but myself, but let this be a warning to those of you who are just as curious as I were but not sure whether you should find out more info about the beta or not.

Let me tell you; Don't.
The beta and it's characters is a HUGE game-spoiler and so are the sites containing information about it, and if you have waited for the game with as much anticipation as I've been, it's simply not worth it.

I'm an idiot for reading the Spoiler forum and highlighting certain items. I've got no willpower but I'm hoping that they'll be plenty more surprises in the game.
 
I relate to that. I also have no willpower. I don't want to see spoilers, but if someone says 'This is a Spoiler' I'll still read it, just because I crave info.
 
I'v only seen one or two screens from the beta and no spoilers except what was in the source code which wasn't much, unless your a big TF2 fan.
 
I've been quite lucky on the spoiler front. Not seen too many.
 
crazy, during those long months of silence, i too let my curiosity build. only twice have i visited those sites. the first time, i scrolled down a few inches and saw a floor with blood on it, freaked out, and closed the browser. i didnt want to see what kind of enemy was in the shot. the other time was before halflife2.net came back on and i was bored with all the bullshit over at PHL. so once again i googled it, went to a site, saw the top part of a pic that had a headcrab in it, freaked out and shut the browser. im just glad i was able to have that determination to not spoil anything for myself. but still to this day it bothers me that if i wanted too, all i have to do is find one of these sites and id get a whole bunch of new info which i crave daily. i know we have noone to blame but ourselves for this curiosity, but im still pissed at the jerks who stole/distribute beta material.
 
could you name a couple of these sites so people like me know who to avoid?

Then we ourselves would be linking to beta information and it wouldn't make us any better than them.

Distribute between yourselves in private, but not in public please.
 
I can understand the topic-starter..i had the same 'need for info'..and luckily, when i saw a character list on a site, i went away. I do however know certain pieces about the story ( not too big, thank god), due to playing something i deeply regret having played.
I just couldn't stop :\

So i guess i'm kinda lucky, considering how many times ive been in the position to reveal alot of spoilers.

Amen! I've seen a half ton of spoilers. The worst part? I didn't go out with the intention of spoiling the game. I've seen everything from shots to casual discussion by some inconsiderate ****wit in a forum, usually along the lines of "OMG A WENST SEE Hl2| BRAETA ANDS TEH _______ wAS GOOD WTIH TEH ____ AN ____"...

Weapons, features, characters, enemies- too many "respectable" sites allow unmoderated discussion of this kind of thing. I doubt what I've seen/read will ruin the game for me, but its something I'd rather have done without- but then again, what are we meant to do? Stop using the Internet until the 2014 moron cull begins?
 
The only things that were spoiled for me were weapons, characters, and some levels. It was so far from completed that I know much of it changed, so they aren't really spoilers. I loved the beta. It was so much fun, and it made me want HL2 more.

Have you checked the character viewing tool? According to other people, that is a HUGE spoiler.

And Mrchimp, anything that isn't halflife2.net, basically :)
 
I never even heard of the character viewing tool. I don't want to look. I pretty much refrained from playing anything but the E3 levels just to mess around with physics. The rest was basically left untouched.

Stick with reputable sites like Half-Life 2.net to avoid those kinds of shenanigans.
 
Yeah, I totally recognize that, too much stuff has been spoiler for me too. No important characters though, just one enemy, that was when the first images of the leak started appearing, it was a shot from the modelviewer, a few guns, and a level or two.
But somehow, I managed to ban those images from my mind, I wouldn't be able to recall how the spoiled stuff looked. I love my crappy memory :cheers:

But I'm afraid I'll click on the spoiler forum one day...
 
When the beta was first stolen i couldnt resist looking. Luckilly for me it was too early on for anyone to have found out any spoilers.


I havn't looked since. And by the looks of this thread its damn lucky i didnt.
 
Well.. Seeing alyx nude isn't something I regret.

I don't think there are too many spoilers in the beta really, we already knew about most of it because of the e3 video anyway.. Nothing abut the story or anything is spoiled.
 
I went to a site with some of the beta info. It was in Russian though, so I'm kinda glad because I couldn't read anything on there to spoil the stuff for me. Saw a few new enemies, but stopped myself before i got too far.

same here! didn't learn of fcking thing.... but had alot of fun and want this game even more!
 
I'm having trouble not reading this thread, even though I'm sure there's nothing harmful in it. Gah!

Yep. I played it for easily 20 hours, probably more. Avoided the two levels that had any real tie to the storyline, and didn't play any wav files outside of the game

I did this, I only regret seeing one model
 
I too stumbled across a site containing level screenshots and 2 new characters I have not seen before. Temptation got the better of me and I looked at the 2 new character screenshots and some of the level shots. After I had seen them I felt as if I had let myself down as I'm trying ever so hard now to avoid any media or information regarding the game as I want to know as little as possible about the game to keep it's wow factor for when I play it.

I don't want to know anything more about the game (aside from what valve releases to the world, and what get's printed in PCGamer) So as I can expect anything when playing time comes.
 
I don't feel bad for knowing everything.

I've figured out that the story ain't that breathtaking and lost my anxiety over HL2. I feel better now.

But anyways - DONT DO IT
 
Sprafa: I have a hard time understanding how you did find out the whole story since the game isn't completed yet and the leak dosen't have enugh info to actully spoil the story.
 
If you actually see & listen every file, you can get a pretty good hunch of a general outline...
 
I've played the beta and trust me, it does not spoil anything. If anything, it makes you want to see the finished product even more. The beta is more like a giant sandbox where you can run around, and uh, run around some more.
Really, anyone who says they fully understand the plot from playing the beta must have a different build from the one I saw. Whether you play it or not you're not ruining anything or missing something. I looked at the whole thing like it was a steam valve that released a bit of the pressure to prevent me from going kinda wacky with angry anticipation.
 
same as the above posters.

The leak is so badly compiled and crap that it didnt do anything for me. You cant enjoy the leak even if you wanted to, its that bad. So whatever i see in the final version will be a big surprise for me. I feel for you though that they shouldnt be posting screen caps or whatever without you knowing first.
 
Tork, I loved the leak. It was so much fun. It was easily playable. But, it wasn't finished enough that it would spoil much of the game. In the whole beta, there was only ONE completed map.

Completed is a bit of a stretch, too. It had alot of textures missing, but, for the most part it was complete (unless you're talking about a different level, I can only think of 2 that were complete)
 
Probably different, but it is the most fun. I only know of 1 completed, but if you want get on AIM and speak to me. I want to play it later anyway.
 
I've also played the beta for many hours... It's great fun and there aren't really spoilers in it, but don't listen to the different sounds in the sound folder! I heard something there I shouldn't have heard and it pisses me off! Also looked on a few models, but luckily for me, I didn't see any new creatures or persons...
 
i wish i was able to see new content that was guranteed to be spoiler free, but any of these sites are probably full of them
