Alright, my last piece of my hl2 comp got here today (2X512mb of Hyper X PC3200/DDR400). I was talking to some of my more computer savy friends and one of them said that I probably won't be able to install xp again. I posted a thread a while back asking if anyone had reformated their comp and reinstalled xp again. I just realized that since I would be installing xp on a totally new computer that xp may not allow me to. It was to my knowledge that xp identified your computer by you system configuration (eg what processor, ram,) you had and stuff. It's a totally legit copy of XP and im wondering if I will be able to install it for my new comp (I'll be erasing my old installation).

There wont be any trouble. Even if there is, it wont halt at installation. Since i used a dell XP code, i could only use it on my AMD comp. Today, when i got home and started up my P4, it said i had one week to activate windows. Ive tried to "renew" it but they dont let it since its limited from dell.

id say thats an old wives tale... kinda like the old xp can only allow you to change 3 things in your pc...

you can change whatever you like and you can install windows xp as many times as you like on your machine... and a fresh format install should be a good thing todo :D

therook

Well the deal is, I'm not just going to be reinstalled on a reformated drive and going into the same computer.

What's happening is this:

Old computer: [Drive 1 (Basically Clear of all data, only has little bit of win 98 installed| Drive 2 (Has Windows XP on it)]
New Computer (I built): [No drives]

I'm going to take Drive 1 out of the old comp, put it into the new one, and install XP on it (the same CD I used to install XP on Drive 2). Get everything set up and ready and then put Drive 2 into the new computer, and then bring all the data over from Drive 2. Then format the windows XP installtion on Drive 2.

This isn't just a simple reformat and reinstall on the same comp.

it might be easier to reformat drive 1 on old comp, move it to new comp, install winXP, then move drive 2 over.

That's what I was planning on doing. I think in the XP install you can just install over a drive/partition.

When installing on a machine with different hardware it asks if you would like to migrate the account. You can do that up to 3 times. After the magic number 3 you can call them up and they will reset how many times you have used it. When installing XP and you come to that point and it tells you that you cannot migrate the account there is a phone number (800#) provided, right there on your screen at that stage of the install, that you may call.

Damn microsoft... I cant believe this. The last week, its been giving me a warning each time a log on that i need to activate. Today was the last day. I start up my comp, it says "you must activate windows now before you can continue" I cant even use my P4... I called up microsft, and i CANT renew my code!!! They said i have to purchase another liscense.

BTW, for some reason i cant access ANY search engine on my AMD rig, and im helpless... Any ideas?
