1st post here but not my last.
I was wondering if 8 bit Alpha maps will be in, and not the rather dated 1 bit jagged edges we see today. If 8 bit alphas are in, things like hair and various cloth types can be achieved easily and realisticly. The reason Im asking is I am almost finished on my second character for HL2 and Im starting the hair, which will be difficult to pull of if only 1 bit alphas are used. I have in the past used 1 bit apha maps on my characters but the illusion of
hair or fur is ruined the closer you get to the model, 8 bits would sort this out no end.
The other thing is the bump mapped sub-division surfaces mentioned in the big video. If all surfaces can be sub-divided dosent this mean that we could theroreticly make anything in this manner, and that object whether its a wall or whole house can be blown into little pieces using the sub-division principle..? If this
is so, then I for one cant wait till I see that guy run for cover behind a brick wall only to have me take out the bottom row of bricks so the ensuing avalanche of rubble would squish him to pulp..
