So my brother is in the next room tearing his hair out because iTunes is giving him shit as he tries to put music on his new iPod. Personally I think he deserves everything he gets for buying one, iPods are for wankers. However, I'm just wondering is there any alternative software he could use to transfer the tracks other than iTunes?

I'm a wanker apparently. What problems is he having?

When he tries to run iTunes nothing happens, the process shows up in the Task Manager but not in applications. There's no error message, nothing. The only noticable difference is that the whole machine starts running slower and wont shutdown.

Sorry for the generalisation of iPod owners. That's just my impression of the ones I've met, brother included.

I'm happy to let him suffer, however ultimately it's me who's going to have to sort this out and I'd rather just get an alternative piece of software than have to faf around with iTunes.

I should also mention it was working ok previously. I've told him to uninstall and reinstall it, apparently that didn't work.

the software can only run as good as the pc and its OS environment is ;) i have itunes running on a couple of pcs and had no problems yet. how about reformating and reinstalling windows?

afaik winamp is capable of syncing it with mp3s, not sure though. also amarok on linux can do this smoothly. you just wont be able to buy stuff using the itunes store then. that's one of the nice features of itunes, buy and sync in about 2 minutes :) also using the ipod as usb stick could work...just never tried that.

no, im not up for any discussion about DRM, buying music or pirating it or anything, so go away if anyone wants to try this :-P

lol, 128kbps DRM files.

I don't have any actual solutions. I just felt like laughing at the poor quality of the iTunes Store songs.

There is a winamp plug-in he can try, unfortunately you can't simply drag and drop files on to an iPod like a memory stick.

Well he tried system restoring back to a date when it did work however the computer crashed during the process. Now the system log is corrupt and Windows wont start.

I think ha's suffered enough, I'll have to reinstall windows tonight. When I've done that I'll checkout that plugin. Cheers guys.

cant help but notice ur name sounds like a new microsoft product......which sucks balls compared to the ipod....

why the hell do people bash the zune so much??? i got a ipod video for my birthday and i took it back to buy a zune instead. im glad i made that choice. its loads better then ipod could ever be. the sound quality and picture quality is better. anothor thing is just the UI on the ipod is getting old and boring. the zune UI is excellent.

Any program could mess up if it is installed on a flaky OS install. I've never had iTunes mess up on my machine. My brother messed up his Ipod when he disconnected it from the PC prematurely. Every time he tried to sync it with his PC it would freeze the PC. He had to restore/format his Ipod to fix his mistake. Starting from scratch helps if you don't know what is wrong.

Just go to processes, (CTRL-ALT-DELETE), stop the iTunes.exe processes and reopen iTunes.

what????
where the hell does ps2 fit in with ipod? a smart buyer knows what the best product there is to buy not the most popular.

There is no alternative to iTunes. Are you insane?

Apple is the best, and the most popular :S

theres nothing new about apple so how is it the best to you??? its just known more then the zune is. just because its popular doesnt mean its better at all.everyone is buying them because everyone else whats one.

I don't understand your question...? New doesn't = better.

just because its popular doesnt mean its better at all.everyone is buying them because everyone else whats one.

Yeah, the iPod is considered "cool", but that doesn't change the fact that it really is the best that can be bought. There's a reason why everyone is trying to copy the iPod's design.

whose copying the design.....the design has been the same since the first gen basically. the only competition when the 4th gen ipods came out were just the rio's then the creatives came and do you see any copys at all??? noooo

That's true although it could be a sign.
everyone is buying them because everyone else whats one.
There are people buying it because it's a good product and there are also people buying it because of the hype/popularity. It's such a successful product because of both of those aspects.

While it's popular to have an ipod, it's also popular to hate on em. ;)
My brother used to hate ipods because of their popularity (he has one now btw). I thought it was quite funny when he didn't see the irony.

When was the last time you went shopping for an mp3 player? I'm not going to bother with examples, as you've clearly stated your opinion. What do you have against Apple?

im not against them really im just wondering why everyone says the zune is so bad when its so much better then ipod.

well, if you want your music wrapped in 350 layers of DRM shit, then go buy a zune......

i never buy music from the music stores so why the hell does that matter? drm music suxx

edit: if you have no experience with both then please dont post your false opinions on something you havent owned.

i think though that the statistics speak for themselves.....
hell, even the USB power adapert for ipod outsells the zune on amazon....

http://www.tuaw.com/2006/12/02/ipod-usb-power-adapter-beats-zune-on-amazon/

I just don't think that microsoft should even bother with the whole media/drm/music player thing. Everything they introduced thus far has been clunky, complicated and has ultimately failed. The zune seems to be going down that same route. (http://www.wired.com/news/culture/0,71435-0.html)
The iPod has suceeded because of its style and interface, and the ease of use that most people have experienced putting/purchasing music on it. Heck, its been reported (not by apple, mind you) that 1/3 of teens in america own an iPod. (http://news.com.com /Teens+and+media+a+full-time+job/2100-1041_3-6141920.html) Overall, I think iPod/itunes combo has been pretty successful....
And this time I backed up my "False" opinions with references. Happy?
And so to relate to the thread topic, in my experience, I had problems with iTunes (on windows) when I had a USB driver conflict or issue like that...
