i cant get my althlon xp 2700 working at 2700, it gets past the first screen the one where you get into cmos from but then the screen just gose blank and nothing happens.

even at 2600 it is very unstable, restarting itself sometimes when asked to do simple tasks (clicking on my computer for instance)

does anyone know what the problem could be?

It sounds like it's overheating, are you sure that the heatsink is properly seated?

yearh the heat sink seems to be on pretty firmly though i did make a bit of a mess of the thermo compound

Did you clean that up? And what brand of compound did you use?

i dont know some cheap stuff, i bought some more yestarday called "silver grease"

one thing i felt the bit of the case behind the processor socekt and it was warm, is that normal considering there not actualy touching?

It depends on how hot the CPU is, try reseating the heatsink. And another question, is the grease all over the cpu? and if it's silver, that's what may be causing the instability.

ok i just intalled something for mointering the temp and
* with a the side of an a house fan blowing into it
* running at 2400 rather then 2700
* and not even doing anything. the cpu u temp is about 50 degrees C

do you mean you are running your 2700xp at 2.7 ghz? i hope not. lol

Um, thats rather hot, are you sure your heatsink is meant for that type of CPU?

lol no im not not running it at 2.7 ghzs. it is the right heat sink the only thing might be the the thermal pastse, type stuff wasnt applied correctely but would that alone explane the high temp

If the heatsink isn't sitting exactly flush or if there was too much thermal compound then yes.

What is your room temp and case temp?

My CPU temp right now is 45C and Case temp is 31C. I'm havn't been playing games or doing anything but surf so far.
It is a little warm in here though. Always causes temps to rise.

Also remember the temp sensors are never very accurate. Infact some boards will report a much higher temp (for safety) than it really is.

my room temp and case temp are very low a have a very powerful house fan blowing into it

btw what dose pwm stand for? cause looking at the temps that is nearer to its cut off point
