BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thai police are looking for a thief who left a word of thanks after stealing 4.7 million baht ($113,000) from an automatic teller machine at the weekend.

"He wrote the word 'Thanks' on the side of the tampered ATM with a felt-tipped pen. The hand-writing was rather neat. I think he may be trying to taunt us," Lieutenant-Colonel Nathachai Thepsuporn told Reuters on Monday.

Nathachai, the deputy police commander in the northern province of Phrae province where the robbery took place, said the heist appeared to have been the work of someone with a fair knowledge of how an ATM operates.

Near the looted ATM, police found a box of metal-cutting acetylene equipment the thief had used to get through two security doors protecting the rear of the machine. ($1 = 41.60 baht)

Was that an extra large ATM? How much cash does an average ATM have?

4.7 million sounds like quite a lot, but I guess it depends in what quantities you can get the notes there. I mean they could start at 100 baht, maybe 500...

"thanks"

lol, that's funny

The article said 4.7 million bach = $113,000

I was more surprised at the total value contained within the ATM... Not that there was necessarily a lot of bank notes inside.

I had never thought about it before but wouldn't have guessed they contained more than 10 or 20 thousand US dollars worth.

I think it probably wasn't such a good idea having that much money in a single machine, but I have to admit the thief's comment was funneh.. :monkee:

Warning conspiracy theory...

That just sounds like too much money in one ATM... My theories on an inside job to cover up a prior embezelment of the bank.

That's what I'd do anyway....

Hm, you could probably be correct! :O

There's alot of stuff going on in the backdrops that we don't have a slightest clue about..

$113,000 at one atm? yeah, sounds fishy. no way is there that much here in the states in one atm. just not necessary.

Exactly... I rarely see a paper note any more... Everythings electronic for me except my stinking water bill. For some reason my City hasn't gotten beyond abacuses...

Most ATMs only have about $5,000 in them, the one where I work at is refilled daily.

Also, look at the Country this was in. Where was it localized? How or where was it inplace?

:D
