It's been a while since I've posted here. I'm surprised my avatar is still in place.
So, I'm writing to announce a new tool I've written that generates ambient occlusion maps quickly and easy. It's called SMAK, the Super Model Army Knife and it uses a special hardware-accelerated technique to render the AO map in less than a minute, what usually takes 20 or more minutes. It can load .obj files and Silo .sia files as well, with more to come in future versions. It's also very simple and easy to use. Here's an example of what the results look like:
It's perfect for baking AO maps for your UV's without needing a very expensive studio such as XSI or Maya. AO maps of course improve the look of your model a great deal by adding shadows to corners and holes and such, giving the model a better sense of depth.
