ambient_generic sounds. buggy or?

i dont get it. are some sound files just not suited to be ambient generics? i took a looping transformer sound and put it near a machine. it loops. its positional, etc. works nicely. BUT.

only problem is, i can hear it from about 1500 units away even! the hearing distance for the entity is set to 25. anyone else experience this quirkyness? i can understand that they make some sounds that are omnipresent, but this is a transformer sound, or the sound of DOG doing something. its positional, but can be heard from a mile away despite the setting i gave it.

should i use another sound entity? arr me matey!
 
or anyone know how to use a regular sound file as a soundscape without having to make your own soundscapes.txt file?

these have the exact behaviour i need, but since my map is for contest, i can't go making my own txt
 
ive been asking the same questions... ambient_generics are anything but stable it seems. They seem to work randomly on sounds.

Figure it out yet btw?
