Hello
Well I received my new AMD 64 3200+ CPU and MB yesterday and installed it.
Unfortunately the few tests that I performed confirmed what I was afraid of - my new machine is the same speed, sometimes even slower than my old P4 3.0 Ghz. Now I am really torn if I should just stick to my P4 or should I keep the AMD..
But one thing that caught my eye is that my AMD 64 only has 512 kB L2 cache, I thought that they all have 1 MB. What gives ? I couldnt find any benchmarks/comments on that topic. Does it affect speed a lot ?
I'm kinda pissed of at AMD now heh

The 3200+ should be a 1MB L2 cache model. It should also run at 2GHz (200x10).
If you want to test your CPU then load some real games and benchmark it (Farcry, UT2004, etc).
I have a 3000+ and it is 200x10=2GHz as well but it only has 512L2 Cache, like it should.
If you ordered a desktop A64 3200+ and it only has 512KB L2 Cache then RMA it and get what you ordered. The difference between 1MB L2cache and 512 at 2GHz is 200+ rating.

I know A64's load apps quicker. ;)

Tests = bullshit.
Play a game...you'll see the difference.

You bought the "newcastle" version of the Athlon 64 3200+. That version only has a 512 Kb L2 Cache. As for performance, you shouldn't notice a big performance jump at all. After all, you were playing a P4 3 Ghz system and I don't think you can exactly call that system outdated.

Yeah, it was the newcastle version but don't worry about the 512kb L2 cache.
The MHz is much more important than Cache. Usually the 3200+ only runs at 2GHz with 1MB L2 cache, like I said before.
Yours should be 2.2GHz! hehe
Hmm, that means you have a 11x multiplyer which would be great for OCing.
You only need a 227 bus speed to reach 2.5GHz.

cpu-z says I'm running 200.3 MHz with x11 multiplier = 2202.8 MHz

I can't really RMA it because it was a special deal. As long as it's as fast or little bit faster than my old P4 3.0 I'll be ok with it because I got it (almost) for free :)

if you got it almost for free i cant feel bad for you. i thought u spent a pretty penny on it..

You can keep your P4, and I'll pay you $10 more than you paid for the processor if you mail it to me :)
