AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800

X2 is simply times 2. Two cores.

To be honest I wouldn't upgrade yet. The 3500 should last a while longer yet and it'll play any game out right now and probably a few more to come.
I'd save your money.

Whats the rest of your system specs?

Unless you are doing a ton of stuff at once or media creation that could really take advantage of the dual core then I wouldn't go from a 3500+ to an X2 3800+.
The reason is you are loosing GHz (2.2GHz->2GHz) for the multitasking ability. An X2 4200+ would be equal speed as the 3500+ but with 2 cores.

I would stay where you are unless you think you could use an extra core for other applications you are running in the background.

well my Xfi and my Keyboard have so many apps running in the background so that should be good for the X2 right?

If you're worried about the clock speed, you can always just OC it.

This is lemonking... if he ever tried to OC anything he'd somehow end up in the hospital

your xfi and keyboard? im confused.

Are these just little system tray programs or are you running a program that is doing a lot of proccessing on the side?
An X2 will help with the little system tray programs and make it smooth but I wouldn't think it's 300$ nicer. Not since you already paid for a 3500+. If you are running some programs that really do some proccessing (example, video encoding) and another program at the same time (gaming) then an X2 would really help.

True although that isn't always an option for everyone.
But those X2s can OC pretty well if you get the right stuff. X2 4200+ from 2.2 to 2.7GHz
That is almost the speed of a $1000 FX62 (2.8GHz) except for the L2 cache size.

Ohh i have that AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800, and its pwnage i tell you!

if u are gonna buy the cpu, i strongly suggest to get it after Intel releases their conroe processors. according to dailytech.com, almost all the X2 processors will have almost a 50% price drop. so ur X2 3800+ is gonna cost like around $169.
like what Asus said, upgrade only if u have to and upgrade to like a stronger processor like the 4200+ if u have too many apps running in the background. i say stay where u are. 3500+s are really good when OCed.

Yeah that is a great idea. Would cost ya a lot less.

WHAT! oh man and I just went and purchased an x2 3800 for $245. :/ My previous processor was an athlon xp 3000+ running at 2.2ghz

Thats still a really nice upgrade.
Athlon XP's are slower than Athlon 64.
I went from a XP 2800+ to a A64 3000+ and thought it was a worthy investment.

lol, my AMD athlon xp 3000+ running at 1.3 ghz, even though i put the bus at 166 mhz..... cant even play HL2 at good settings, but i can play GTA- San Andreas at high settings.

Man, you need to get that fixed somehow. :(

Can't he just edit some clockspeed multiplier value in the BIOS? Unless there's a problem with his heatsink/fan that's forcing the computer to clock the CPU down, that is.

He made a thread. We've been through it.
