Could someone explain the benefits of this processor over a Pentium 4 with HT? I have heard about driver issues with the new FX-55...or is that only with a certain OP? I am planning on using straight up Windows XP Home Edition...does this take full use of my FX-55 processor? I am getting a new computer and am trying tomake it as gamer-friendly as possible. It's been years since I've gotten a new computer and I want something that will last a long time. I don't have the time to make to my own, so I thinking of buying something from either Dell or Alienware. Anyone have any experience thoughts on these companies' computers?

If you dont have time, and have money go for Alienware all the way.
Athlon FX-55 is best gaming proc. at this time. try to get new SanDiego ver. of FX-55.

DONT bother with alienware, their $2000 systems you can usual build for $1300 or so....FX-55 is top of the line, and HT does you no good for gaming....but an fx55 will run you 800 bucks....and sometimes it is a little overkill unless your an hardcore enthusiast....besides the FX-57 will be out soon =)

An Athlon 64 or FX would be much better for gaming. Windows XP Home would be fine. CPUs don't need drivers installed like video cards or soundcards. And there are no issues with Athlon 64 or Pentium 4 CPUs as far as 'driver issues' or whatever you mentioned. Now if a motherboard someone or a company (like dell or HP) used in the PC had driver issues, that could be.

Half-Life 2 performance

Thanks for the replies.

I definetely want to go with AMD Athlon 64s, I have heard that Windows will release their 64-bit OP sometime next Christmas. Now, my biggest problem is that I really haven't the time nor the skill to build my own computer. Alienware is looking way too expensive, and I wouild like to install a top of the line ATI card instead of their prepackaged NVIDIAs. Dell, on the other hand, doesn't offer AMD A64 processors. So I'm in a bit of a jam. I was thinking of ordering the Dell I wanted (cheaper and comes with a nice screen and sound system) with a lower, cheaper pentium. I would then order an AMD Athlon FX-55 and have it installed on the dell. Does anyone know if this would work? Are Dell's computers compatible with AMD processors?

Does anybody know anything about a Pentium® 4 Processor 660 with HT Technology (3.60GHz, 800 FSB)? How much better is the FX-55 than the newer Pentium 4?I have heard that the line of 600 P4 will also be compatible with 64-bit OS. Any truth to this? RIght now I'm looking at a Dell System that has the above processor, 1gig of ram, and a 256MB PCI Express x16 (DVI/VGA/TV-out) ATI Radeon X850 XT PE card. Along with a 19'' monitor and 5.1 speaker setup for $2500. Compare that to the $3000+ Alienware computers without a speaker/monitor. Granted, they have the AMD Athlon 64 FX-55 and a 6800 Ultra PCI Express 256MB DDR3 w/Dual Digital and TV Out (is that the equivalent of a ATI X850?).

So...I have a bit of a problem. I'm now leaning toward making my own computer, or at least finding a reputable website that you can configure your own computer and have them build it. Any suggestions?

if u wanted to buy a top of the line dell it would not be worth it with if u wanted to add an amd u would have to change the motherboard ram, and mabye hardrive. also there is so big difference between the x850 and 6800ultra it mostly depends on the games u play but 6800ultra dose have pixel shader 3.0 support

Athlon 64's and Pentium 4's use a completely different socket. They will not work in the same boards. If you want to go Athlon 64, you won't be buying Dell.
Here is a few charts with the P4 660 in it.

Also, Intel's new dual core chips have DMR (digital rights management). :O gasp
hehe

Why not go to a store and check out an HP Athlon 64 machines. There are some pretty good models out there if you look around. Not sure how many stores have the good ones instock though. Of course there is always ibuypower.com.

Some people dont like ibuypower, I wouldn't know since i always build my systems. You could go with monarch.
