is x2 3800+ far more powerful that the athlon 64 3700+, besides it has dualcore?

as far as clock speeds go, no not really, but the fact that it is dual core is very significant. Games like Elder Scrolls IV are starting to use dual core's at least a little bit for a performance gaine (they can run more processing threads at once, and handle more memory at once).
And also it's cool to be able to rip DVD's and play Half-life 2 at the same time without any performance hit....the multitasking is truly unparallelled on dual core compared to single core processors.

Yeah I just upgraded from a p4 2.2 ghz to that and its a huge leap in multitasking among other things.

THE 2.2 didn't have Hyperthreading technology..and plus, that's like saying comparing a 5200FX to a 1800XT..silly

I'd pick the dual core chip.
If you ran 1 basic desktop program the Athlon 64 chip with the higher clock speed would win. In this case the X2 3800+ would be no better than the single core 3200+ since one of the X2 3800's cores would be idle.

If you ran more than 1 program (ctrl+alt+del right now and notice how many apps are running under the Processes tab) or a program that could split itself between both CPUs (Oblivion, Quake 4 etc) then the Dual Core chip should win even if it is a few clock speeds slower. If you do more than just email and web you would have an advantage with dual core at least in some way. ;)

I also upgraded from a Geforce 4 MX 4000 to a 6800, you see I'm about leaping not jumping :bounce:

get it

I have this cpu and besides its superiority now, more and more programs will use the dual core functionality lending to its longevity as a processor

I'd say get the dual core as well.

I had a Pentium 2.8ghz with HT and went to an Athlon x2 3800. The difference was amazing and when games will (it's not a question of if but when) they will take advantage of dual cores you'll get even more performance increase.

The 3800 X2's are great for overclocking too. It easily goes to 2.2ghz with stock fan and with really good cooling your looking at 2.6 or 2.7 depending on your chip.

It's easily the best CPU I've owned.

haha, im not the one getting it. my friend is building a really good pc over this weekend and he is also getting the 7900 gt and 2 one gig rams. so i actually recommended him to get the 3700+, but he decided to get the 3800+ as he likes to download and play games at the same time. so it is a good decision. thanks guys!
