Interesting rumor.
ATI is actually a pretty big company with a lot of different product lines. Nvidia is also a smaller company than ATI.
Their desktop Chipsets are growing, they are huge with notebook chipsets and they make gfx chips and for consoles.
I guess they are valued around $4 Bil while Nvidia is more expensive at $8.

It would be nice for AMD since they could say they have a complete solution like Intel with CPU,chipsets and GFX.

Although there was a similar rumor with Intel buying ATI which was later shot down.

I hope AMD buy's ATi and makes better stuff, or should I say improved stuff. Their things are quite perfect already =>

interesting....considering that Nvidia seems to always be in bed with AMD.....

I'd go back to ati cards if they were better, however, atm they arn't.

Mergers usualy mean nothing when it comes to product quality.
It's just that there exec's will go to the same meetings and share eachothers profits.

It's bad if it happens.

I mean we need more companies like Intel, AMD, nVidia and ATi. Right now when I choose to build a PC I only have two choices for a CPU and two for a GPU.

More competition means more products to choose from, lower prices and faster technological developments.

Well Intel provides all 3 CPU, Chipset and GFX. If AMD does buy ATI then they would also offer all 3. If Nvidia decided to make CPUs then that would be another that offers CPU, Chipset and GFX.
Someone mentioned this in the Dailytech comments I think.

Hollycrap, AMD loves Under-Dogs.....I love this.
This is like AMD Vs Intel all over.

AMD and ATI teaming up... that'd be crazy.

Yeah I saw that. Although how many times did Dell hint at selling AMD parts and then deny them (repeat) before it happened?
We will just have to wait and see. I agree that it doesn't seem probable but then neither did Dell using AMD...

More AMD and ATI rumors.
Looks like Intel is discussing this behind closed doors. They seem to be taking it seriously.

The article starts talking about how this could mess with Nvida's Chipset buisness. I don't think that would be a smart move. If anything I think Nvidia should keep making great chipsets. With that much strong competition in the market it would make it harder for big Intel to dominate with their CPU, Chipset, GFX solutions for OEM.

and again AMD/ATI news

LINK
"“On the July 4, a person close to the negotiations revealed that AMD has reached a purchase agreement with ATI, the news will soon be officially announced,” a news-story at Chinese web-site Sohu.com reads."

If this is true...weird times are upon us.

It's kind of bad in a way, less companies, less competition. I don't want to choose between two companies the next time I buy a computer or upgrade.
But hopefully I'm just being paranoid!

I see what you mean. But look at Dell and Alienware. Dell bought Alienware but alienware doesn't seem to be changing. I bet if this goes through, that AMD would do the same with ATI.
