Hey. Sorry if there is a thread in this already but I'm looking to upgrade my computers CPU. I currently have an Intel Pentium 4 3Ghz. Wanting duo core processor so i can play games better. What would you recommend?

as of now intel is reigning as the best multi-core processors. amd was great for the generation you have but this generation they are falling behind.

Great thanks. I'll look into prices. There's a shop near me thats selling Intel duo core for $250. I don't know much else about it though.

Say what? Seriously?

must be like a like a 6800 or something. your better buying hardware online then from retailers. retailers prices are usually 50% higher then online.

The shop is a local internet cafe that does computer sales and repairs. They have a good reputation but I'll look up other shops anyway.
I have another question though. I had 512MB ram (two 256mb sticks) and i got an average fps on CSS of about 90. I bought 2 GB (two 1GB sticks), took out the 512mb and my fps is now averaging around 35fps. I changed back to the 512 and my fps is still around 35fps. The 2gb is faster then then the 512mb as well. Any ideas what the problem is here? I'm going to the shop tomorrow to see if they can tell me why my fps has some how gotten worse. It's just slowish in game though. Everything else runs a lot faster, like opening programs and files.

Putting the new memory in probably changed a setting how the PC runs. Could have reset/lowered the FSB or CPU speed or memory divider, something like that. The setting would just need to be changed back in Bios. The 2x1GB set should be a lot faster (smoother frame rate) and it should be noticeable over just 512mb.

some pentium 4s use socket 775
Yeah. Although you will still need to check if the CPU is supported by that specific board. Not ALL 775 CPUs are likely to be supported, usually at a cut off point where they changed the FSB or something.

true but i would think the 1066 fsb core 2 duos would be supported. unless of course its only supported up to 800 fsb

When I brought my computer into the shop yesterday they said my mother board was ok, my graphics card was ok and ram is now ok and all I need now is more cpu. they didn't say anything about upgrading any other part o my system. I'm going back to the shop tomorrow to see if they can do something about it and to find out the details on the cpu they have.

That's awesome! Glad the board will work. I know when core2duo came out everyone was asking that question, if their board would work.

This sort of explains it, old article.
"First is the fact that while Core 2 Duo is Socket 775, it won't work in almost any existing Socket 775 (Socket T) motherboards. With the move to 65nm, the reduced voltage Conroe was designed for, and the greater need for stable power that Conroe requires, boards had to be redesigned to work with Conroe."
