From The Wall Street Journal:

Wall Street Journal said:
AMD, locked in a battle with Intel Corp. over chips known as microprocessors, said it expects first-quarter revenue of $1.5 billion, about 15% lower than the company reported in the fourth period. The company previously had predicted a decline in line with normal seasonal patterns. The AMD spokesman said a decline of about 7% is typical for the period.

More bad news from AMD. Their ATI acquisition does not seem to be helping them as of late. Expect Intel price hikes in the near future.

Do you think this makes now a good time to build a new PC in regards to value for money and lastability?

When the chip companies have been on a roll and in fierce competition before prices drop rapidly and your build is quickly outdated and requires updating often (costly business if you want cutting edge)

It's certainly not a good thing for overall progress with technology tho!

well there's ddr3 and intel's nahalem processors over the horizon: true quad cores

but there's always somethig new over the horizon

Isn't DDR3 basically fail in terms of real improvement.

it is but in the long run it'll be faster ...same happened for ddr2 over ddr when those chips were lreplaced by ddr2 ..very little improvement

Isn't DDR3 basically fail in terms of real improvement.

On current platforms, you'll only see a 2-5% performance improvement over DDR2, which comes at about twice the cost. Currently, it's hard to justify making the switch to DDR3, but the same was true after the release of DDR2.

If prices on 6 month old hardware has dropped a lot and you don't suspect software (games) in the near future will use more advanced tech than the 6 month old hardware can deliver then go ahead and buy. Still getting just refresh stuff on the market for GPUs. Games will still be licensing UT3's engine a year from now. Don't ya think Crysis will probably remain one of the most demanding games for a while? And that's a game a lot of people would just play once...
COD4 and UT3 I would think would be the ones to pay attention to since they are MP.

Some rumors say Nvidia will bring out a new card Q3 2008 (late summer/early fall?).
