Hi there!

I'm looking for a little advice here: after finishing school and serving my country I'd like to go away somewhere. Right now I'm very interested in the USA, especially the south, even more specific: Arizona. As far as I know the problem is, that the US have very strict immigration rules and I don't know how to make a longer stay possible without actually getting a green card. My plan is not to open up a software company or anything else like this bullcrap, my aim is not to get rich in the land of milk and honey, I'd rather just live there for some years and make a living with a normal job; (anything, that is; physical labor and all, too - but I'd also be interested in Law Enforcement)

So, I know that there are many Americans around here, maybe even some from AZ - any ideas? :) I'd love to come over and live there for a few years, do you guys think this might be possible somehow? I don't know the requirements for immigration, but I can name some facts about me... I've got the highest school-degree one can get in Germany, I speak the English language pretty well, I have no previous convictions, I'm willing to work hard...

...any help is appreciated :)

...and no, this ain't no other Garfield-like-shit-thread, I'm pretty serious with this.

...and please no US-bashing, politics or other spam, thanks.

Why do you want to do that, I'm not talking about going to the US, but after getting the best degree possible, go somewhere else and do jobs that people with half your education could do.

You know german and english so why not be a translator or something, thats pretty decent.

Let's just say I'm interested in it :) Plus, you know, I feel kinda spoiled, never had to do any real (hard) work... why not combine it? Well, I don't think I could explain my reasons the way people'd get it right, so I'll leave that be... ;)

That's a good idea! I'd just need to know if such positions are needed there.

Wow, that's cool! That would be something I would like to do.

...but the problem still is that I can't just come there and apply for a fulltime job :| I'd need a permission by the fed. government. And that's the point, they won't do it just like that... right?

What area is your degree in? Some companies are visa sponsors. So if you can get here in the first place you could try to get a job for one of those companies. I had a friend from Tawain I worked with at a job several years back. The company we were with at the time worked towards sponsoring him for a visa.

I admittedly don't know much about the process. That might be something worth looking into though. I drove through Arizona on my way to California. Beautiful place. Scottsdale and Phoenix are amazing. They're also exploding with growth. You can find anything from big city to middle of nowhere in AZ. They have a good snow skiing in the mountains and they have great golf at lower altitudes. Very unique place.

nope ...plus your education may not be compatible in the US. I've met quite a few foreign doctors, engineers and professionals who drive taxis in canada

you're better off getting a trade like carpentry, electrician etc ...they're always in demand and employ immigrants, plus the pay is high

just go to the US consulate in your country and ask for info

Well... English and Arts... while the last might not be very useful ;)

Yep, I think so too.

Ah yeah, that's something I call work :) but will they sponsor some kind of visa?

just go to the US consulate in your country and ask for info

That's probably the best thing to do... only problem is that the next one is in Berlin, I think :p and that's pretty far from here.

That site seems to explain the process of getting into the US...

Thank you, sir!

well that's the tricky part ...basically a employer cant hire a foreigner (outside of the country) without justifying it by saying that they cant find a native (a person who is a citizen) of similiar qualifications

hehe ...the distance is nothing compared to uprooting everything and moving to a new country ...calll them they may have an immigration kit they could mail you

just be warned ..it wont be easy ...no matter what you do people will always see you as an immigrant ...some wont care but others will...I've seen the attitude some canadians give my father who has an accent (even though he's been here for 45 years)

Hmm that means I'd need a really hard translating-job or so... :)

Hm yeah... of course I'd make a vacation to there first... and check out if the mentality around there is OK. If I'd come into Phoenix and half the city stands ready at the airfield to chase me away with pitchforks and torches... well... ;)

I've heard that LA sucks, which surprised me. But I wouldn't know any better. As for NY... well, I'd like to go through the rest of my years without having to worry about my life, my wallet, and my shoes. :)

ya but it has to be better than living in say texas or alabama (no offense tron :) ) ...personally I couldnt stand being in such close proximity to religious zealots

No, I really want to go south ;)

A tech job you say... well, I wouldn't know if I'm special in any way concerning technology :( architecture maybe? :) Gotta check what they need.

yes an architect is always in demand just make sure a diploma would be honoured in the US

That's great! Architect would be the first job I'd want to do! The problem is, there's way too many of'em here in Germany already, I wouldn't get a job here anyway :)

sure you would ...if you're good ...like any job the good ones always find work

Oh god.....not Arizona. It's so effing hot. I'd suggest New York. I know, I'm an east coast fanboy.

Why not try Seattle? There's an abundance of tech jobs there.

Coca Cola, somtimes war!
Coca Cola, wonder bra!

You should move to some mid central state where it's cool but you don't miss out on technology, and get the best connections for both US EAST and US WEST servers.

I've been to Phoenix twice now, I've loved the city and the state both times I've been. The people are great (sure, some might have odd political views, but heck, doesn't stop them being friendly, polite and pretty true to the "freedom" concept), the weather is great pretty much all the time, the landscape is really awesome (once you get high up, it's a bit like a Europe climate, but then once you slip down, it's scorching again! Lovely!) and housing is really damned cheap, for something I'd consider to be a small mansion it's pretty much what my little house costs over here in the UK.

Phoenix was well laid out, bustling and seemed to be generally thriving, I'm sure you'd do well with an Architects Diploma should you get the immigration sorted.

Wow, you just described Kentucky perfectly. :)

Yay! I'm from Arizona!!!!!

Recoil, I'm from AZ (Sedona, specifically, it's a new-age/tourist town in the mid-north), and I would say that if you do manage to get over here (I'm not all that familiar with US immigration and such), do not go to southern arizona, especially if you're from Germany. Many of my German friends (I go to an international boarding school here, but I've lived here pretty much all my life) find phoenix and the surrounding areas to be witheringly hot and scorchingly painful compared to what they're accustomed to. Hell, I'm not even German and I find it unlivable. In the summer, you practically can't do anything that doesn't have some sort of air conditioner installed.

If you really want to come to AZ, I would suggest somewhere in the north, but not on one of the Native American reservations. Perhaps Flagstaff would be a good place. Also, if you're in northern arizona, check out Sedona (about a two hour drive north of Phoenix, where the only major airport here is), it's probably one of the most beautiful places I've seen in real life or otherwise. Beautiful red rocks (red due to the oxidization of the high iron content--the Mogollon Rim used to be submerged beneath the ocean a couple of billion years ago), along with some of the strangest spritual sub-cultures around. Worth a visit, at least, and some of the hiking and creek areas are wonderful.

Anyways, to sum up a winding and overall too-lengthy post, don't go south, travel around (especially to some of the nicer natural attractions, Grand Canyon for example), and don't expect a blistering nightlife anywhere except really Phoenix metro. Happy immigrating.

EDIT: PS: Rammstein is tEh_5h17. It's a really good video, too.

Prices are going through the roof, real estate boom. It's still feasible to live here though (unlike say, New York, where a tiny studio apartment is super expensive, you can buy an acre of land her for 1200ish, or rent a house/apartment for like 400)

Arizona is great, just don't get tricked by real estate ads for the bad places (the ones I know of are Golden Valley and places in the White Mountains)

Flagstaff is VERY nice and the climate isn't too horrible (higher elevation)

If you come to Scottsdale or Phoenix or basically anywhere not Flagstaff, be sure you can handle the heat. In places like Bullhead City (across the river from Laughlin, Nevada) it gets to temperatures like 115 degrees F

edit: If you're looking for Southern culture, Arizona is not it. Arizona isn't considered part of "the South" (IE: CSA of Civil War) it's West or SouthWest. The culture here would be more similar to someplace like California rather than anything cajun/southern

So many replies... :)

Ok, I'll see :)

Hm, I'm practically part italian and often go down there; so I'm used to some heat ;) though I believe you when you say it's even 10°C hotter in AZ.

Yes, I know! The "real" southern states go just as west as TX, right? That's just fine, I'm looking for something like NM, southern CA or AZ :)

Thanks for the other info.
