An Internet Phenomenon?

I hereby table a bill making it against the forums rules to post any artical that has been posted on any online news/tech/geek stuff websites. The rational for this bill is that while such articals are interesting, they contribute to the "blandness" of the forum; reading the articals on those news sites and then seeing them here makes this forum redundant and unappealing. In addition, many news sites have thier own forums in which the discussion about said articals can take place.

In addition, when particularly exiting "news" happens several threads are often created on the same subject, often within minuets of each other. This clogs the forums and dilutes the variety of topics from which to choose.

Such sites shall include, but are not limited to:.

www.fark.com
www.slashdot.org
www.theregister.co.uk
www.theinquirer.net
www.penny-arcade.com

Exemptions to this rule are in the case of:

a) Natural Disaster - articals informing the forum body of natural disasters in other parts of the world.

b) Human Tragety - Accidents or other non-deliberate human caused tragety.

c) Globally important news - News of wars, terrorist attacks, assainations and the like are important information for all forum goers.

I've never seen that before, but now that I have I can say that it's not really funny in the way that the star wars kid was funny, but creepy, and unsettling, in the way goatse is creepy and unsettling.

ductonius, what is wrong with world news? i would rather know that hundreads died in a train accident than a fat guy likes to dress up in a tron suit. Especially as many people dont watch the news.

the 'news' is edited, exaggerated, ignored, and played around with by the calculating and rather dodgy fatcats that hide in the shadows. It's usually had all the good bits filtered out to leave nothing but depressing bad news to keep us all feeling crappy.

On the other hand, news stories covering humerous topics such asfat people that dress up in tight spandex and pretend they're in the TRON movie - are too comical and are only reported on by the happier elements of the media - Websites run by 14 year olds in their bedrooms.

Choose what you believe. On the one hand, you have a life of depression and sadness. On the other, you have a life of humor and happyness.

The choice is yours.

Maybe you should take another read of the bill. I completly agree with you. World news is one of the exemptions from the rule that says "no posting stuff you saw on Fark/Slashdot/Register/etc".

The problem with "news" items like this tron guy is that they're so chewed over by everyone that they end up making whatever they appear on boring and bland.

I heard about this tron guy last week on Slashdot, laughed and moved on. Now its on Fark and Slashdot again, AND half a dozen other forums AND HL2.net.

If I wanted to discuss this I could do it in any of the hundereds of other forums currently with one or more threads on this topic.

All I'm asking is that people try to keep this forum from becoming just another fourm.

well maybe other people want to discuss that sort of stuff here. and maybe it isn't your place to say what people can and cannot discuss here. it's an off topic forum, hence pretty much any topic within reason can be discussed here as long as the mods are fine with it. don't shove that stuff down our throat please, not all of us want to visit those sites as they're getting pretty boring now, and not everyone has time to.

so yeah, do what you like anyway.

Well, someone woke up on the indignant side of the bed this morning.

To respond to your assertions.

1. Obvioiusly.
2. Thats why this is a suggestion tabled for other peoples approval.
3. Just becaue you can do something that dosent mean you should.
4. By making a suggestion, I am shoving it down your throat? How does that work again?
