I was surfing the net when I came across this article written in 2002. So it is fairly old but it brings up an interesting point: is the PC just a platform for shooter games? If you think about it, with a few exceptions, the majority of PC games are FPS'. That's all I ever hear about pretty much with PCs (that and MMORPGs).

Anyways, here's the article:

I suppose it's more of a rant but what do you guys think about it?

It wasn't a few years ago.. but these days all of the companies are making FPS.

The RPG and the RTS genres are still going well though.

PC is a good platform for FPS games, I find controller's too hard for FPS games, plus PC's were really the first platform to come along that did FPS's, before Wolfenstein 3D and stuff like that, consoles never got to taste FPS's

2 years isn't really that old man.

I suppose. But writing "A somewhat old article about pc gaming" takes longer. :P

And don't get me wrong I love FPS' but where's the variety? The odd strategy game that comes along isn't all that good. Starcraft was awesome, Warcraft III was good too (I have some issues with Frozen throne which I won't go into) but other than that...I can't think of any other good RTS games.

Rise of Nations, Age of Empires, Age of Mythology, Op: Flashpoint CTI game mode, IMO Starcraft did RTS the best, Warcraft always felt like D&D, Starcraft kinda gave your units a personality and did it in a format that looked 3d almost.

The PC is mainly for fps yes but thats what the world is living on now a days. fps rules the gaming community. So its no surprise that fps is for the pc. To be honest a console is a pc if you have never thought about it. What do consoles have differently from the pc? Nothing actually. Consoles have controllers and pc has controllers. Consoles have keyboards and pc has keyboards. Consoles have joysticks and pc has joysticks. Sure there are a few different things 2 it but they are mainly the same. Anyways all the pc games are on the console aswell. Really console and pc are for the fps games it just depends on the player. Anyways I sort of typed that all wierd but for my final statement nobody gives a rats ass that fps is mainly on the pc because fps is the way 2 go and not many people are going 2 disagree. :D

^^^ Really bad wording and descriping up there ^^^

Almost forgot to mention Baldur's Gate II. Now that game kicked some major ass in my opinion.

But with all the new gen shooters coming out, wouldn't it be kick ass to have like, a new kind of rpg with like source engine graphics? That's the kind of stuff I'd like to see but it doesn't look like it's going to happen.

Morrowind

I have Morrowind but I just couldn't finish it. I tried to like 3 times but that game is just...well too slow for me. :E

Starcraft still gets up to 100-200k people at peak points.
Hell Wc3 gets like 70k at peak points... Starcraft is still an owange game. Great RTS! Most played one to date.

Diablo 2 can get that much to :)

Like... Bloodlines? ;)

I'd really like to see some good top-down view RPG's again... I bet it could even be done on the Source engine...

you probably could do that on the source engine, but would it really be worth it?

i'm sure it costs a bunch to license that engine and for a top-down view RPG you'd be licensing something that has a lot of stuff you probably wouldn't even use. I couldn't see implementing physics or something like that into a game like final fantasy.
