Anandtech benchmark MSI nforce 4 with 2 x 6800GT in SLI!

i know. next month i m getting one of these :D

AMD64 + Nvidia + PCI-Express x2 = Teh Win

No, no, no. You got the equation all wrong.

AMD64 + Nvidia + PCI Express x2 = Teh Win = Poor Blahblahblah

That's because they have poor memory bandwidth in comparison. They don't handle AA/AF as well. That's why the 9800XT can compete with them on that level as well.

They benchmark with AA/AF to get the CPU limitations out of the picture as much as possible.

My 6800GT would have been a much better investment if it was PCI-Express. /cries

I foresee all the top 10 systems on futuremarks hall of fame bieng Nvidia SLI systems...

And I bet AMD too...

Although SLI really isn't that great of a solution for most customers.
Who would buy 2 6600GT's over a 6800GT?
For that matter who would buy 2 6800GT's now for $800+ when come 6 months they might have a single card that is faster for $500.

The only place I can see this working well is if you buy a 6800GT and later buy another at a reduced price.

Add up the numbers yourself for buying into SLI vs a better single card every so often (while selling your old).

I think the best use of this new SLI configuration would be as follows:

Right now, buy a mobo supporting PCI Express, and SLI. Purchase a 6800GT for 400~ supporting SLI.

12 months later when the new cards come out:
Purchase another 6800GT supporting SLI for... 180 dollars. And BAM 2x performance. (Theoretically ofcourse.)

I wouldn't do it. :|

And that's the thing, it won't be 2x performance but more along the lines of 50% average. Only when the CPU scaling is greatly reduced which newer games are going to be more CPU intensive.

Yep. :x The thing I'm worried about is, you buy the same card again to boost your performance, but it's still old technology. I prefer newer technology over clock speeds, timings, etc etc.

In SLI the total memory bandwidth scales which is why there is a performance increase. In the High res AA/AF tests, I suspect the 6600GTs run out of memory which causes the performance to go to the shithouse. As for the "not producing 100% increase in all tests" Thing with the 6800GTs, The CPU is bound to be the bottleneck at some stage.

Asus: The whole superseding thing is about time? How bout I abstain from buying technology for 10 years? There would be no fun in that, its about getting the technology when the game is out, before it gets unpopular.

so this sli won't support 16x pci express? just 2 slots of 8x pci express?

edit: just one more question. If I buy a pci express mobo is there an adapter such that I can use my agp ati 9800 pro so I can use my agp card for now until I decide to buy a pci express gpu?
