*sigh*

watch this:
http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/babylon/Screens_Misc/Screens_Alpha1/b5itf promiovideo_0001.wmv

bare in mind, that was in 1999, so five years ago...still not even CLOSE to being matched.

Some features listed that might not of been seen in the vid:

1000 ships in the dynamic universe at a time. While your docked, the universe continues, you lose a wingman, he's never coming back...

Truely dynamic music unmatched even now. No fade out and fade in to suit mood, this was thousands of transitional peices that molded the music seamlessly and inaudibly from one to the other....meaning also random music.

Work your way up the ranks, from private to fleet commander. meaning fighter, to squadren, to cap ship, to fleet commanding. Based entirely on how you proform in game.

Did I mention unsurpassed visuals for a space sim, FIVE YEARS AGO?!? (Including newtonian physics!)

Lots of different fighters from lots of different species.

*Sigh*

I want mah game! :( But vivendi told sierra to cut expenses, and sierra killed it in favor of proffessional bull riding and hoyle games. :( :( :(
makes me sad that sierra and vivendi will see some of my cash for HL2...

Or maybe the developers thought they were ahead of themselves and decided to cancel the game?

Wrong forum.

As cool as that sounds, I see no way that a game from 5 years ago could live up to all that.
Was that running on the Freespace engine? If so, you'd of seen what the game was capable of more or less.

damnit firebird... sorry firefox didnt like that so it decided to give me a sh** load of jargon.. and fox was supposed to fix this kind of thing I thought.... gah

...wow i cantr believe someone would make such an unprofessional movie like that. i hope that wasnt by the deevlopers in order to sell the game. we were watching a box for over half a minute....if this is fan based its a different story. the rest of the vid was just screen shots...this is vaporware.

Firefox is a dumb name.. hah, Phoenix was best :)
anyhow, if that B5 game had ever come out, it'd of either a. fallen short of its expectations or b. been 1999's Doom 3, in terms of system requirements :)

.... i'm having an off week.... i don't get it... did the game ever come out? ..... and did they cancel it? and where the hell did he get all of that stuff?

Fan movie, yes..

And actually, I'm very conservative in what this game could have done. It was shown at E3 1999, a few months before sierra canned it. The entire engion, models, and such were done, all that was left was the basic outline for the campaign, which being dynamic, was a fair amount of work left. The engion was an entirely new engion, capable of MUCH MUCH more then freespace2 (Good game BTW)
What pisses me off the most, is that we were less then a week away from the demo release... :( I just saw that video, and felt the need to post here about it, let some new folks know about it.

the developers did NOT cancel the game, Sierra did. Every developer was let go, for over three years the entire community and the devs tried to get the game back. the devs even started their own company, but in the end Sierra said no, to ANY price. (We pretty much offered a blank check, and had signed petition with a few thousands names on it willing to donate to get the game back...)

for those interested, we backed up the original website, screenshots and official films included, and it's available here: http://www.firstones.com/b5games/sim/sim_main.html (note, all planets were 3D, travel was 100% open ended, though it might wind you in a court marshal, and also note the spectacularity maps on models...)

thehunter1320:
Yes, game was canceled in 1999, after three years of petitioning, etc, Sierra simply refused to sell the sourcecode/game.

Or maybe the developers thought they were ahead of themselves and decided to cancel the game?

ummm, no. The engion was done, and they were fired, along with a few other game's devs.

Shuzer:
New engion, and a very amazing one, even in the E3 demo the universe was entirely open ended AFAIK (Wasn't there...live to far away) But these guys are VERY talented coders, I still corespond to them. They all have new jobs now of course. That leads me to another thing I didn't like though...Sierra moved all the devs to sierras home base, just three weeks before fireing them. Real nice, huh?

Also, the website I posted a second ago listed system specs...OK for the time I think.

ergo, my sig. Whats amazing is that the entire community is STILL together, devs and all, at www.firstones.com It's amazing that 2000+ people all just picked up, moved to another forum, donate to keep the site alive, faught for YEARS to get the game back, failed, and are still together...really tight knit group, great people IMHO. At this point everyone knows everyone else...and we still reminice. Lot's of us worked on making TCs of other space sims, such as Freespace and Independance war, some of our russian members made a freeware flightsim utilisizing some more modern features (bumpmapping, etc), and the devs (One in particular) still post on a regular basis.

The movie was the persons first, just a bit of rememberance for the game/devs. Brought back some old feelings let me tell you. I'm still siching I could buy the game WITHOUT giving money to sierra/vivendi...but impossible, they will take their cuts. :(

hmmm....I wonder if that material is still in storage, like, availlable....*Contemplates trying again*

sorry not go all off topic but if u want users switching over to ur product, u need to have the video play in the browser like IE does :p

not that it stopped me from switching anyway.

on topic: this game looked to be ahead of its time.. and surely looked as if the requirements for time might have been through the roof.

TBH I think VALVe is about ready to find a new publishing company, I mean Vivendi is being really slow on lots of things, like the production of CS:CZ.

I think everyone's got a grudge against one company or another for some reason. I'm still slightly bitter over Sierra's firing of Dynamix (Tribes 2 team) immedietly after they finished the game. They shipped and instantly got their pink slips.
That said, I do think its always best to move forward, and having failed to force Sierra to release the game, the community should work towards something new as those modders seem to have done.

Oh, We do have the freeware IFH game. :) (http://ifh.firstones.com) Looks good, but it won't ever replace B5:ITF...

Myself, I moved on to Rendering/modeling/writing tutorials. Actually started one mod as well, but never managed to finish it.
